Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kelley Laws. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kelley, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
Sweet Valley Photography | When I was deciding on a name for my business, I wanted to find something that was both meaningful and portrayed my heart behind my work; I feel like Sweet Valley Photography does just that.
When I hear the word valley, I think of the backcountry and hiking through valleys covered in wildflowers. That image alone is so peaceful and beautiful. On a deeper note, I’ve been through a very dark valley in my life that God has so graciously redeemed, restored, and made sweet. I want to use everything I’ve learned through that season to help me better serve and care for my clients.
Kelley, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I specialize in natural light, fine art weddings and shoot both digital and film photography. My goal is to serve my clients well, while capturing timeless and beautiful images that are unique to their story. I really care about each of my clients and put my heart into my work!
It is my hope that they could look back at their wedding photos in 5, 20, or 60 years and feel all of the same emotions rush in again- from the smallest details to the biggest moments.
A little bit about me- I love Jesus, adventures with my family, coffee with friends, and running triathlons. I’m also an Aggie and an enneagram two! My husband, Dave, and I have three sweet kids and one fur kid named Scout. We used to shoot weddings together before we moved overseas for a few years. Once we settled back in America, I opened the business back up as Sweet Valley Photography.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I’ve mentioned it before but I truly care about my clients and their story. You can often find some tears falling from my face during the ceremony because I think it is SO beautiful to see two people vow to face the challenges of life together hand in hand. After being married for (almost) 10 years, we’ve been through alot of hard and ugly things. My incredible husband has loved me and walked with me and hasn’t left my side. I one thousand percent believe that with God a couple can walk through anything together and come out stronger. So on a wedding day I am full of hope and so much excitement for my couples and am committed to praying for them, loving them and capturing who they are as a couple! Hope and excitement for their unique stories drives a lot of my passion in my work!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
When I first started professional photography around 2012, I would only shoot at “golden” hour (the hour before sunset). Believing that this was the (only) best light, and that I couldn’t take photos outside of this time. However, now I’ve learned to shoot at any time and love the creativity that the different lighting throughout the day brings.
