We were lucky to catch up with Kellen Coleman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kellen, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the best thing you’ve ever seen (or done yourself) to show a client that you appreciate them?
As a consultant my job is to know my client’s business better than them, at least that is the goal. When doing a Media deal with a network for one of my YouTube clients a fee was needed to have material placed on platforms like Apple TV etc. Because of the way I found out about the company I was given a kickback from the company for my client’s payment. I gave the kickback back to my client because I really love working with the company and told the owner we get our retainer and percentages on deals we make so kickbacks aren’t necessary.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My start in Consulting/PR came from me being a journalist in college and many magazines going out of business due to the power of social media. Since I knew the talent and the publicists and managers, it was a natural transition. I have been doing business for 20yrs based on word of mouth. It has not been easy but keeping clients has been key, and gradually going up on services and prices that have allowed me to grow the team, travel with my family, and assist with the homeschooling of my children. I get to travel inside the country as well as Africa and have started a consulting business in Sierra Leone.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Bootstrapping is how I started now that I am a member of a venture fund and glad I did it the way because I have seen founders lose their businesses due to not having control because of the funding they accepted.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth especially from my clients brings the type of quality clients we want to work with. There is nothing like a referral from your successful clients to bring more money. My podcast DIVERSIFIEDGAME.COM also helps in networking and turns guests into clients.
