We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kelisha Perry. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kelisha below.
Hi Kelisha, thanks for joining us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
Orange Pop Media started running as a business in 2018, but back in 2013 I was filming and had the intentions of making music videos. I was just starting college that year, yet my focus was on my family’s well being (since I was away) and relationships that no longer exist. I did not put my craft first and lacked that “go getter” mentality. If I started sooner I would’ve built more skills in film, though I remain a student of my craft. I just feel I would’ve been a pro in my mind by now. Also, I would’ve made the beginner mistakes and figured out the business/artist balance. These things might’ve put me in places that I wanted to be as far as brand awareness, but I’m learning to keep pushing forward and focus on what I can achieve now.
Kelisha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Kelisha Perry and I am a cinematographer and entrepreneur based in Baltimore. I got into filming when I was an adolescent. When watching action movies I would always want to know how they shot certain scenes, especially the stunts. I watched a lot of behind the scenes for music videos- my favorite show was BET Access Granted. Through my production company, Orange Pop Media, I provide visual services for small businesses and various artists, from graphic designers to singers. My clients may not have visuals to promote their services or products. They may have ideas for reaching their audience and just need a creative look to expand their reach. My company helps to build that visibility. I currently work with a lot of local artists because they can often be overlooked. What I am most proud of so far with Orange Pop Media is the connections I’ve built with over 100 local artists in just 4 years. I’m excited to continue building this network because there are so many talented people out there who deserve to be recognized.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew about audio design and marketing earlier in my creative journey. Audio is 50% of the viewer’s experience so it is important to get it right. I have been learning it as I go and studying as much as possible so that I feel confident before I bring someone on the team. Although the marketing landscape has evolved since 2018, I had limited marketing knowledge until I had to go out and build awareness for Orange Pop Media. I am trying to learn marketing strategies and keep up with new trends at the same time so it gets a little crazy.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission is to build spaces for artists to create and build their visibility, that is what is currently fueling my creative journey. In creating these spaces and opportunities, I want artists to feel like the investment is worth it and they can focus on creating to the best of their ability.
