We were lucky to catch up with Keli Jakel recently and have shared our conversation below.
Keli, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
My first home organizing client actually found me on Google. Knowing what I know now about SEO and Google, that was a miracle in and of itself! I worked alone on her project to get her unpacked and settled into her home. She was a busy professional and had moved in months before but just hadn’t been able to take the time she needed to get organized and settled into the home. My husband and daughter were in the car during the initial consult and looking back it’s amazing to remember just how green and new I was. When she signed for my largest package I was shocked and elated. My idea for a business actually worked! The project took several weeks and every square inch of her home was curated for her life.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
While reading a book about blind spots in our lives, I realized that at my very core I am an organizer! That was my strength in education where I organized curriculum, processes and departments. I know how difficult it can be to manage a career and a home, so I chose to use my knowledge and skills to help others create a home they love and feel relaxed in every day. I joined NAPO (National Association of Productivity and Organizing) and have obtained certifications in Residential Organizing, Productivity and Life Transitions. Since then, I have added several employees to my team and trained them on the ins and outs of organizing using my background in education and leadership. Our team is like family- we have the common goal of meeting clients where they are during life transitions and helping them move forward with ease.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I met Nisa while unpacking and organizing a home for a client. She was only available for a day as she was starting a new job in physical therapy the next day but she had been organizing during the pandemic and was available to help. Luckily for me, the physical therapy position closed that night and she became much more available! We have worked together ever since!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Life transitions often cause us to have to pivot. Several years ago I went through divorce and severe illness that took me out of my career in education. I am so blessed now to have this business because it has brought all of the pieces of my career, hardships and strengths together into one space where I can help others in a meaningful way. The experience and training I had in education and leadership have empowered me to lead my team and teach others. The hardships such as chronic illness, divorce and loss of loved ones have given me empathy and a deep understanding of what it feels like to value order and be in a season where there isn’t any to be found. My strengths of ideation and input have enabled me to see opportunities and create systems and solutions for others. My wish is that everyone reach a point in their life where it all makes sense- where all of the pieces come together to make you different and empowered to do what you are meant to do.
