We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Keith Semple a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Keith , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My dad was always 100% behind whatever I pursued. He realised that my love for music wasn’t just a hobby and helped me get started with my first regularly performing group. There were times when I struggled and he would always encourage me to keep going and not give up. I was very grateful for his support.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I began seriously getting into music at 13 when I switched from piano to guitar. Once I was proficient enough, I set up a way that I could perform keyboards and guitar to backing tracks and I went out and started singing and performing at bars. I fell in love with the craft and have been doing it ever since.
Our current band “SEMPLE” provides a live energetic experience that few bands can rival, and with our wide range of styles from classic rock to modern dance and pop, we keep all of our clients happy from large business events to small bars and clubs to large festival audiences.
I think I am most proud of the well oiled machine that my band has become. We are efficient in our set up, show and take down and always make our clients happy. I have surrounded myself with a great team of knowledgeable musicians and engineers. We set a very high standard that I honestly don’t see matched in the industry very often.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I have often gotten the impression that outsiders looking in at creatives think there is a lot of procrastination and laziness. They don’t understand that driven musicians like myself and many others are constantly working on our craft in some way. Wether it be learning new musical skills, producing, writing, building social media, contracts and more. Even something as simple as fixing a piece of broken equipment is all part of the work load.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Honestly, the biggest goal driving me in all my endeavours is “to be happy.” I live my life with the idea that it is my one and only life, and therefore I must do my best to fill it with fun memories. I try to balance my work/home life as best as I can to make sure I am spending enough time with family, friends and still achieving the goals I have set for myself. I believe it is very important to take care of your mental health as you go about achieving your dreams.
