We recently connected with Keith Seaman and have shared our conversation below.
Keith, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Growing up sports really helped shape my life and a lot of my values as I grew into a young man. The importance of having someone like a coach, trainer or mentor was extremely crucial in that. Having someone that can pull the best out of you and give you a deeper belief in yourself than you even had is something I always admired about great coaches and what I strive to be now. Coaches/Trainers have the ability to enhance or diminish the love of a sport and also the confidence of a player. Everyday I still study, read, watch film to find out the bets way to enhance my players and help them on their journey not only in sports but in life. Mentality is the most crucial aspect in sports and life but it is usually overlooked and underappreciated by the masses. As an athlete who not only had unfortunate experiences but someone who also has depression and anxiety, I want to show my players that it’s not easy, but you can get it done. Change your mentality and you can change your life. I don’t want to just create great players, but great leaders and individuals who will go out and impact their lives, their families’ lives and ultimately society, positively.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Keith Seaman and I am a 25 year old business owner of The Compound. The Compound was founded to provide basketball players of all ages and genders a platform to improve and showcase their abilities. As an ex-college basketball player and someone who is still pursuing to play professionally again, I wanted to create an environment of intense competition but also somewhere that focuses on the love and passion of the game. Basketball to me is therapy as it is for many other players and that it what inspired me to develop this brand. We focus on everything from player training and development all the way to professional tournaments for money and everything in between. How we differentiate ourselves is by creating an atmosphere where competition is mandatory. No plays off, no half-assing just good hard work anytime you step on the court. Whether it is a 5v5 run or a 1 on 1 training session you can be guaranteed that everything is structured to a tee ensuring professionalism and efficiency in everything we do. We have a lot to be grateful for. Whether its our successful 3v3 events, our recent partnerships or the athletes were training making and thriving on their teams, we just keep striving to be better and adapt for our people and make sure were giving them the best we can whenever they join us.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The lesson I had to unlearn was that you need to be like everyone else or try to strive to be like everyone else. Now there are hundreds of thousands of people in my field and everyone has similarities. However, when you try to replicate or mimic other companies or entrepreneurs you lose the uniqueness and individuality that separated you from the competition to begin with. Stay unique, stay fresh but most importantly stay true to your ideas and values otherwise you won’t love it the way you should.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Funding the business was your typical hustle at one job to fun your passion. I worked at a construction company from 7am-6pm and then would use weekends and any evening time to coordinate training sessions, runs, or events. For a while out of the gate it was a lot of coming out of my pocket making sure I built properly and took care of the important things to have a good reputation. Now, that we have better reputation, were recognized now more by the community and clients don’t mind paying for our services
