We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Keith Montgomery. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Keith below.
Keith, appreciate you joining us today. Can you share a customer success story with us?
A few months ago, a new client contacted me about designing a logo for her faith based brand. From our initial conversation, it was clear she lacked experience working with graphic designers and was apprehensive about the entire process. Her refusal to pay a deposit initially made me suspect she might be a challenging client. However, upon further inquiry, I discovered I was her third designer she had hired for her brand launch. Previous designers had failed to deliver on her vision, resulting in wasted money and growing distrust of the industry.
I reassured her that my primary goal is client satisfaction. I emphasized that I would provide multiple logo options, offer three free revisions, and be readily available to answer any questions. She decided to take a chance, and I’m glad she did. When I presented the logo samples, she was excited and even purchased two of the designs. This experience restored her faith in the industry and solidified my reputation as a reliable and talented graphic designer. We’ve since collaborated on additional projects, and I’m proud to have helped her overcome her negative perceptions. Overcoming her challenges and exceeding her expectations is a memory I will always cherish.

Keith, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
In the midst of the MySpace era, a young and curious mind stumbled upon a world of endless creativity. Graphic design, a craft that would become Keith’s lifelong passion, found its way into his life as he began crafting custom profile layouts and playful image effects for friends and strangers alike.
Before the birth of DesignsByKeith, Keith watched from the sidelines as others embarked on their entrepreneurial journeys. Frustration simmered within him as he yearned for someone to impart the foundational knowledge he craved. His words echoed with determination, “Mannn, I wish someone could just teach me the foundations…”
At the age of 18, Keith embarked on a journey of self-discovery and skill acquisition. Armed with nothing but determination, a copy of Photoshop, and a hustler’s mentality, he began his self-taught odyssey into the world of graphic design. The absence of a formal education in the field didn’t deter him; he was guided by both his unwavering ambition and the belief that a higher power was steering his path.
His nights were long, often marked by setting alarms for 1 AM to wake and create designs. The grind was relentless, and he made countless commitments to himself to reach his aspirations. What makes Keith’s story so compelling is that he continually delves deeper, recognizing that the layers of knowledge in his craft are infinite, and he revels in the daily pursuit of growth.
But Keith’s journey wasn’t a solitary one. Along the way, numerous remarkable individuals contributed to his development. He holds deep gratitude for those who illuminated his path, making his progress possible. The journey thus far fills him with thankfulness and anticipation for the future.
Yet, for Keith, being a graphic designer is more than a personal pursuit. It’s about being a conduit for others’ greatness. He sees himself as a vessel through which his clients’ visions materialize. Each project is an opportunity for him to channel his creativity, expertise, and passion into delivering results that exceed expectations.
Keith’s joy knows no bounds when he witnesses the success and growth of those he collaborates with. Whether it’s a business flourishing, products selling, or messages resonating, his sense of accomplishment transcends personal gain.
For him, the role of a graphic designer isn’t merely about crafting visually appealing designs; it’s about understanding his clients’ unique narratives, values, and dreams. By embracing their vision, Keith endeavors to create visuals that authentically capture their essence and effectively convey their messages.
To his cherished clients, Keith extends heartfelt gratitude for entrusting him with their creative needs. He recognizes that their success is intertwined with his own, and he considers it an honor to be part of their journeys. Together, they will continue to radiate greatness and make an enduring impact.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
This is a crucial lesson for all entrepreneurs, especially those just starting out. I regret not learning this sooner in my business journey, but its value remains evident in my daily work.
As a new entrepreneur, your primary goal is acquiring and retaining clients. Initially, client numbers may fluctuate, leading to an unconscious tendency to overextend with existing clients. For instance, I pride myself on delivering personable, professional, and timely customer service; however, this often led to overworking myself. I frequently compromised my policies in the name of being accommodating. This included offering free additional revisions, working irregular hours, undervaluing my services, accepting overwhelming client visions, and more.
While going the extra mile for exceptional customer service is commendable, it’s essential to avoid sacrificing your finances, time, or mental well-being to satisfy every client demand. As a business, you should expect fair compensation. Remember, you are also an individual with needs and limits. Prioritizing self-care is indispensable for business success.
I’ve learned to remind myself that I am neither a machine nor a doormat. Clients seek my services because they require them. Ideal clients are willing to compromise, adhere to policies, and pay promptly. Not all clients are beneficial; as a business owner, you have the right to selectively choose who you work with.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best sources of new clients have been a combination of word of mouth and social media. I regularly post my projects on Instagram and Facebook, which is a great way to publicly showcase my portfolio for potential clients. Social media is an effective platform for marketing a business because it allows people to contact you directly and see how others interact with your work.
Word of mouth is probably my strongest source of new clients. Many of my clients have friends or associates who also own businesses, so they refer my services. Word of mouth is incredibly powerful in any industry; if a friend or someone you trust recommends a business, you’re more likely to choose that business over a competitor because you trust their judgment.
