We recently connected with Keith Laue and have shared our conversation below.
Keith, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the toughest things about progressing in your creative career is that there are almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
One of the most unexpected issues that we have encountered recently was choosing a type of content that both resonated with my audience and made me feel like I was able to fully express my interests and the things I am passionate about. I grew my audience through modeling and dancing, but I didn’t feel like either of those did a good job of fully encapsulating my interests like Dungeons and Dragons and the things I care deeply about like the environment.
Any time I felt like I tried a new style of content or talking about a new topic, there was a core group of fans who would react positively to what I was saying, but the content on the whole wouldn’t perform well. It took lots of testing, conversations, and thinking to get to the point now where I feel as though my content performs, is interesting for me and my audience, and leaves room for me to speak to things that matter to me.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Hi! My name is Keith Laue, and I am a dad, content creator, and vegan.
My content is predominantly fashion and fitness oriented with a socially conscious streak. My largest platforms are my TikTok and Instagram where I post different modeling, transition, and storytime videos and images.
I started modeling during my freshman year of college. As an engineering major, modeling and social media became my way to meet new and interesting people who were following their passions. I was hooked.
My daughter, Lily was born at the end of my sophomore year of college, and her birth really put things in perspective for me. I knew that I wanted more time freedom to spend with my daughter and I realized that I hated my major, so by the second semester of my junior year, I dropped out of my engineering program and worked with Taylor, my partner and girlfriend, on other people’s social medias as freelancers.
We quickly realized that being social media managers is a tough job, and after about two years of running our freelance business, I had built my following enough that we felt comfortable making the jump to being full time content creators!
It has been about a year since that change, and while our income is much more volatile, we are incredibly happy with the change, and it has allowed us time and space to pursue who we are more creatively.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is having the freedom to explore and make mistakes.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
The 4 Hour Workweek by Tim Ferris was one of the single most influential books on my growth and thought process as an entrepreneur and human being.
