We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Keith Anthoni a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Keith, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My most meaningful project was the “Make Me New E.P”. While making this E.P. I was just recently baptized at the time and met one of the most important people in my life that helped me find God again. During the time of recording the songs I was battling with my own convictions of my past. From selling drugs, being homeless, to my battles with depression and anxiety. I just wanted a new start and I was finally able to receive it after being baptized. The first song “Beautiful Morning” was symbolizing the fact that I had a chance to start my life over, kinda like the start of a new day. The next song “Water” was referring to going with the flow of life and handling having everything stripped from you while still trusting God. It felt as if I was constantly being tested and tried by evil after giving my life to God. Somehow I was bale to keep my trust in him like the story of “Job”. The next song “Back In The Day” was reminiscing on my days as a kid when I had a child like purity where you couldn’t do anything wrong, but while sharing my story I was comparing it to the dangers of my hometown that’s corrupting the kids there now. The last song “Be Free” Was my redemption song, symbolizing breaking free of my chains that I had. The whole project really just showed myself how far I came and I was able to touch a lot of hearts in the process.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Christian Artist/ Producer/ And Engineer. I’ve always had an interest in music since I was very young. From sitting on my dad’s lap on the piano, to playing drums at church and serving on the praise and worship team with my mother and sister, but I didn’t start taking my own music seriously until 2020. Music has been a source of comfort for me since I was young and it continues to be today, but I wouldn’t be in the position I’m in without God.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that I can do it on my own. Everybody needs somebody and I know there’s gonna be a lot of people who say “I got this on my own” or “I don’t need anybody”. Please stop thinking that now because you’ll never grow in a way you want to relying on yourself. Even if its one person, it’s always good to try and build with somebody, but make sure they’re not a “Yes-Man” and will tell you the truth. Before anybody else though make sure you keep God first in your life because your faith should be before anything. If you have no faith the road gets rockier and giving up becomes easier.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The only goal I have for this is to try and bring people closer in their relationship with God.
