We recently connected with Keisha Spencer and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Keisha thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
In 2018, I separated from my husband and began to work on myself. I focused on becoming mentally and physically fit to walk in my purpose. In 2019, I became a Master Life Coach and launched a nonprofit called Fit for a Purpose. In this space, I am able to do what I love, which is helping others grow socially and mentally. Although my ministry is something I am very passionate it is not my source of income, therefore I developed I started a business venture focusing on coaching and media marketing. Between 2020 and 2021, I accomplished a lot including, publishing my first interactive workbook and contributing writer to two Amazon Best Selling books. I was also a radio personality on iHeart Radio and later Power99DaMixx. However, I struggled with the direction of my business because I’m so versatile and I wanted to utilize all of my gifts. I felt myself misleading the marketplace. I needed a new perspective and vision. With a new mindset, I decided in 2022 to move myself and my two younger kids to Atlanta GA and started completely over. This was the biggest risk that I have ever taken because I had to endure “LACK OF” for a while. Because my vision was so great, I endured the challenging transition, and my kids and I are enjoying this new chapter in our life. My business is growing authentically and God is surrounding me with the right people to continue to grow.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My personality is my brand. I like to spread positive vibes and good energy. I believe that until you can identify with the best version of yourself you can’t be fully committed to your brand. That’s why my business is called A Better Me by K Marie. I offer personal and business coaching. I specialize in Media Consulting and Strategic Marketing Solutions. When I started my nonprofit, I recognized that my gifts could also generate revenue because people needed what I had to offer. Radio and podcasting became an outlet to educate and relate to entrepreneurs and the general population of people wanting better in life. I developed a passion for Hyping Up people who were too modest about themselves or just didn’t have the time to market their brand, while I was doing broadcasts. I used that platform to build a relationship with the marketplace and create a networking avenue. Because of my experience as a teacher, manager, healthcare communicator, and tax advisor, my ability to be personable and sensitive about my client’s brands helps me understand their needs. Therefore I am able to provide them with quality and customized graphics for marketing, strategies for social media and marketing plans, and also being their modern-day HYPE Wo(Man)! I am most proud to be K Marie “The Hype Me Up Queen” because everyone needs a cheerleader in their corner to continue to encourage and Uplift them and their brand. And I am equally proud to host monthly Wine Down w’K Marie networking events to encourage a reset, unwind, and build a network while growing in your business.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In 2020, I stepped out on faith and decided to go into full-time entrepreneurship. I loved working for myself and because of the pandemic, I was able to accomplish a lot of goals that I had for myself. My business was going well, I began to travel a lot. I was building a brand from scratch and making a name for myself. I wrote 3 books, spoke on several different national platforms, and joined powerful networks. Everything was going well until I stumbled on a roadblock. It was a familiar place from a time when I was going through anxiety in my marriage and couldn’t identify my purpose. My business began to slow down, I started to take on too many things, and I had to start back working a full-time job. I became silently depressed and nobody knew. I started coaching myself daily and changing my mindset. I realize that I was been stretched too thin. I ended up being laid off from my job the moment I decided to move to out of town. I lived off my savings for 3 months, found a job in Atlanta, and moved anyway. My kids and I slept on air mattresses for 6 months and I kept on pushing and not getting discouraged. In less than a year of living in Atlanta, we are living in a starter home, fully furnished. I currently, teach during the day and have partnered with a premier tax and business advisement company where I am contracting my tax preparations and marketing solutions while building my network. I am also on the board of a multilayered Women’s Organization that assists women in health, wealth, business, and social. My goal is to show people that sometimes your circumstance may cause you to think it’s impossible or the wrong time to take a leap of faith. Unfortunately, we can not predict what life may bring, we just have to believe that we can push through and carry out our mission.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I recognize that the services I provide are not for everybody. First, I had to identify my target audience. As cliche as it may sound, I had to discover what people liked about me the most. Naturally, I’m a well-rounded person that is able to adapt. However, some people want to see you being social but may not necessarily want to do business with you. That is why my niche is attraction marketing. There are many major companies and small businesses that offer the services that I provide, however, everyone’s business is not attractive. I thrive on being relatable and trustworthy. I use social media and networking events to display my personality and build relationships with the marketplace. When people trust who you are, they are more attracted to doing business with you. I have a specific clientele that has high-end, BIG brand names, therefore I customize their branding tools so that they stand out from similar brands. I have met the majority of my clients by networking and having quality conversations that led to business relationships. It’s important to know that YOU ARE YOUR BRAND!
