We recently connected with Keisha Lyons and have shared our conversation below.
Keisha, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I was always into everything beauty. Makeup, lashes and skincare. A few years ago I was walking through a large chain drugstore because I needed a product for a hyperpigmentation issue I was having. Most of the products in the store catered to those of a lighter Fitzpatrick. I went home and looked online for any product that would help me. There were plenty of products that I was able to choose from but the prices were way too high. I began to research home remedies for hyperpigmentation and found a ton of ideas. I started putting things together, having family and friends try them out and they loved them but I never pushed myself to go any further. Once Covid hit and we were all on lockdown, I needed something to do with my time so I started creating products for friends and family again. They started sharing it with their friends and family and I began to get texts and calls from random strangers asking to buy products. It was at that moment I asked myself “why don’t you believe in yourself when all these strangers do?” The next week I came up with a business name, got my LLC, created my website and launched my products. The response was extremely overwhelming but I loved every moment of it and would not change anything about it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I provide cosmetic and skincare products to those who are just like me and can not afford a $50-$60 cleanser or treatment for acne and dark spots. I graduated high school with my cosmetology license but they did not go in depth into the skincare aspect that I was hoping for. So I returned to school for my esthetics license which taught me so much about skin, skincare and different products and ingredients. I want my customers to know that I am just like them. I know the struggles of being a brown skin girl with not many brands to choose from.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Funding when I started was simple. I was working part time due to Covid but I still had a rainy day stash. I used part of my check from working and part of my rainy day stash to purchase a few ingredients and packaging. Everytime I would make a few sales I would use that money to purchase more supplies. Rinse and repeat,
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source for new customers is definitely social media. About 75% of new customers come from Facebook, instagram and TikTok.
