We recently connected with Keisha LaRoux and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Keisha thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I was first introduced to photography using a film camera in grade school and began my small business in 2021. During my photographic journey I used several methods to learn more and increase my knowledge; the first method was frequency. Deliberate shooting and practice editing helped to show great improvements. The second method was research; studying the specifics of what I wanted to learn greatly helped me. Lastly, getting advice from other creatives when necessary. What could have been done to speed up my learning would have been if I were more consistent with shooting after my initial introduction. I believe consistency and a willingness to adapt and learn are the most essential skills for success in any field. I’ve been faced with some technical obstacles but usually it’s something that can be overcome with one of the three methods described above.
Keisha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have always had an affinity for arts from across the African diaspora, creative imagery, and social issues. Photos By Roux was founded to be an inspiration. My goal is to document and showcase the struggles and successes of those who are typically oppressed. I enjoy storytelling with my work; I create dramatic sometimes surreal scenes to convey a specific thought or meaning. I offer a variety of photo services such as portraits, sports photography, fashion, food and more! My greater aim to provide community support through youth projects, event coverage and volunteer work. I hope to help other minority owned businesses and creatives grow their passions in a way that promotes social awareness and change.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
When I’m able to create meaningful art that is true to my vision and it still resonates with people.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The best way to support artists would be to acknowledge their work and contribute what you can; time, space, not necessarily monetary. We can also call out those who take advantage of artists works for their own profit.
