Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Keisha Jordan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Keisha, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I grew up in a small, country town in Ontario, Canada. There were never many POC and so when I went to school I was the only non-white child in my class.
This instantly made me a misfit. I was bullied from my very first day of school. Even my childhood best friend was subjected to intense bullying because she chose to hang out with me.
This followed me throughout my life. As someone who has always chosen to be different in style, using my voice, and even the path I’ve chosen for my life, I have always been a misfit.
It did take a toll on me and caused me issues with mental health throughout my life. It made me feel as though there was something wrong with me.
Luckily I’ve gotten to a place where I realize that we aren’t all meant to be the same. That would make the world so boring. The misfits of this world help it advance and open up new opportunities that people who choose to accept the normal societal blueprint could never even see.
Now it’s my mission to help other misfits, weirdos, visionaries, mystics and change makers own their differences and heal their societal and familial wounds so they can create an impact in this world.
Keisha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a very multifaceted entrepreneur and creative.
One part of my business is all about helping business owners create aligned brand images through graphic design and digital art. I really started getting into design in 2009 when I started designing cover art for my partner. We were young and didn’t have the funds to afford a designer and with me being a creative my whole life, I decided to give it a try.
This is also how I got into the business of photography. I had been doing his photography and when we had our child, I would constantly be taking photos of them. I turned this into a fairly successful family photography business but then transitioned to models and brand photography in 2018.
This was around the same time that I ended up finding the world of manifestation and personal development. I was immediately hooked. The only issue was that I noticed there weren’t very many people who looked like me at the top in these industries.
As someone who is a woman of color, part of the LGBTQIA+ community with a chronic illness and spinal injury, it was difficult to truly find someone who I felt I could relate to. That became the catalyst for how I wanted to run my own business.
I decided that representation and inclusion would be the foundation of all that I do. In 2020 after searching for an oracle deck I couldn’t find one that had TRUE representation and so I decided I would create one. This became The Divine Collective Oracle Deck – a deck that centers groups who are often not seen in a divine light. It features women of color, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and those who are differently abled.
In March 2022 I completed my certification in NLP, TIME Techniques, Hypnotherapy, EFT Tapping, and Life and Success Coaching and in August I started my Master certification for the previous mentioned modalities as well as a breathwork certification which I’ll be wrapping up in February. I’m also a trained Human Design chart reader and Astrology lover!
My main mission is to take these amazing tools and the knowledge I’ve amassed over the years and create safe spaces where those who have always felt they didn’t fit in, can heal, be in community and step into their power. I want to change the narrative from, “I don’t belong”, to, “I’m here to be unique and live life my own way” so that they feel empowered to be fully expressed and use their voices in the world and in their relationships.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
What helped me really build my reputation within my market was saying the things that other people were afraid to say. I’ve always kept things super open and super honest. Allowing myself to be seen being human and not just in the perfect moments. This really helped people connect with me not just as business but on a person to person level.
People know that when they work with me I will always be real and I’m not going to ever make them feel wrong for being a human or make them feel like I’m above them in any way.
How did you build your audience on social media?
When I first started my business I was trying so hard to fit in with those who were on brand. I straightened my hair, tried to speak more professionally and even used my middle name because people had shamed me for the name Keisha.
It was literal crickets while I was doing this. It was like people could pick up that this wasn’t me being authentic.
When I reclaimed my name, started showing up how I really wanted to and allowed myself to be seen in my truest form, that’s when my audience started to grow.
I wasn’t being like anyone else and that alone helped me stand out. I didn’t aim to be someone who was on a pedestal, I aimed to be someone that they could be like, “Oh, me too!!!”. This has led to me creating a beautiful audience and community.
