We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Keisha Denise. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Keisha below.
Alright, Keisha thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Everything that I’ve touched and made a business out of has come from pure passion! The passion to encourage others and the passion to make people feel beautiful starting from the outside! If I can just reach just one person, I’m satisfied!
Since I was a child I’ve always had a passion for hair! I grew up going to work with my aunt who was a, what was call then, beautician. After watching her do different styles on her clients and I would always try to mimic what I saw on my dolls. Throughout high school my friends and close family friends entrust me with their hair. And the support and passion just continued from there. Now I own a hair company, My Kinks and Kurls, LLC, where I will be selling hair, making custom wigs and potentially get back behind the chair.
On the blogger side idea came about years ago, like over a decade; I just didn’t have an idea of what I wanted to blog about. After living life a little while longer, going through some challenges like going from a married stay at home mom to single with children in corporate America and all the struggles that came with that, building a closer relationship with God and being able to encourage other women ( and some men), I had finally figured it out. I wanted my blog, my channel, and anything else I touched to be of encouragement and inspiration to others. I always live by the phrase “If I can just touch one person, I’m satisfied”. I love being able to share my different journeys and hear from others that were able to be inspired. When I realized my experiences were helping others I knew my platforms would be just as helpful.
Understanding my passion(s) and ability to inspire others put me in the position to not only help but grow a business as well.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I’m a wife and mother of 3 boys (18, 15 and 13) and a 6 month old baby girl. I created My Kinks and Kurls, LLC because I have a strong passion for hair that won’t go away. Seeing how wigs help women that struggle from different hair loss problems inspired me to get into wigs. Additionally, it’s a natural God given gift. I started my YouTube channel where I discuss all things motherhood & lifestyle. KeishDenise.com is my blog site where I carry on the conversations of motherhood & lifestyle. Thus far I’ve shared everything from hair tutorials to one of the most personal things which was my IVF journey.
I pride myself on not being placed into a box or having a specific niche because I have a lot more to offer than just one specific thing. Each and every one of my platforms are there to help & inspire others and to have a little fun while doing it. Is what I do unique, its not but its not the same either.
The one thing that set me apart from others is my willingness to be transparent. I share my good times and my bad, within reason of course. And I’m proud to be able to say that. I take pride in being able to encourage and inspire through my experiences and testimonies.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Often times life brings about unexpected changes that we have to push through. I can’t count how many times challenges have arose causing me to halt and ultimately change some things in my life that trickled down into the business. When I was in my 20s I started cosmetology school. Everything was going so well and then LIFE really happened. I went through a divorce which caused me to have to quit school and get a job because now I was a single parent supporting 3 children. To this day I haven’t gone back to cosmo school because no time has been the right time. Instead I found another way to follow my passion and that’s through creating my business (My Kinks and Kurls, LLC). I braid hair, sell hair and make wigs and make YouTube videos, which I find pleasure in doing them all.
During the time of trying to figure out how I could follow my passion I went to get my Bachelors of Science in Business. Since I wasn’t able to do hair like I wanted to I had to lean on corporate America. Not sure how much my degree has helped, if at all. However, I was able to prove to my children that regardless of your situation(s) and what you go through, you can always finish what you start.
I still have a couple of goals that I had to pivot on and still wanting to accomplish and in due time I will!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson I’ve had to unlearn is people telling me that you need a corporate job to be successful. Thats the old fashion way. Older individuals lived by the standard of being successful in corporate, which I understand why they felt that way. Whenever I would discuss me wanting to do hair I would always hear, “there’s not any money in that” or ” you can’t go far in that” and so forth. But hair is a multi-milllon, if not billion, dollar industry. Theses definitely success there!
I would be lying if I said it didn’t play a part in me not going “hard” in my businesses because it did. The people that I really wanted to be in my corner wasn’t as supportive as I expected them to be. Now that I’m older I now understand their thoughts. However, now it doesn’t affect me my vision. I had to look into the business field that I was pursuing and learn how to be successful and ultimately get away from what was always planted in my head as a younger adult.
