We recently connected with Keionna Henderson and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Keionna thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
When I was in high school I was in this group that help young girls prepare for women hood. One of the girls that attended the program who went to another school was asking around for a makeup artist. I told her I was a MUA and that I could do her makeup for her ring dance. At this moment I have never done anyone’s make up outside of friends and family, But surprisingly I wasn’t nervous. I scheduled her appt and prepared for the day. I had my makeup station all set up for her arrival. When I was done she loved it!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a 24 year old License cosmetologist and Makeup artist. I attended Mergenthaler Voc-Tech where I studied cosmetology. I received my license in cosmetology in 2016. I’ve always been into makeup as a child so putting the two together was the best thing for me. I specialize in weave extensions, cutting, and makeup artistry. My true passion is making Individuals feel better about them selves and building self esteem. I’m most proud of how far I came at only 24. I am the first entrepreneur in my family and there is no blue print for what I am doing. I’m in this industry because I love creating and changing lives.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was being told the answer No. When I was 16 I applied for my first job at mall. Initially when I asked the manger were they hiring he told me no. I also had a friend that worked there so I knew that wasn’t true. So I decided to stay in the store greeting customers as they come through the door and asking customers if they needed help finding anything. About 30 mins in he decided to hire me. He told me that he admired that I didn’t give up and could tell I really wanted the opportunity.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective way for me building clientele has been consistency. My clients know what days I work and hours. Posting consistently so those who don’t know about me can get familiar. Staying persistent until your known for the services you offer is key, you want to be the first person that comes to mind when clients think about booking.
