We were lucky to catch up with Keinan moton, Tayon Smith, Duane Martin, Dayzia Colflesh recently and have shared our conversation below.
Keinan, Tayon, Duane, Dayzia, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Taking a risk is the best way to get you out of your comfort zone. Getting out your comfort zone is the best option for growth. We believe that taking risks is a must when trying to make a name for yourself in an industry where everyone is doing the same. As an organization taking a risk for us was making a decision to plan and throw our first event as JUDO which was a listening party for our hip hop artist K. Mo. We let the thought of this being our first event make us hesitant to throw it only because we thought we weren’t going to get as big of a turn out due to lack of a solid fanbase. In most situations it’s very common for people to stop or not take that next step. Knowing this, we were determined and motivated to move forward. To our surprise we had a bigger turn out than we thought. Imagine if we never took that risk and let our fears take over. We wouldn’t be here doing an interview with you y’all.

Keinan moton, Tayon Smith, Duane Martin, Dayzia Colfish , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
JUDO Stands for Justice Under Determination & Opportunity. We believe with the strength in numbers, we’re able to create endless opportunities for not just ourselves but others around us with the right determination. Our main goal is bring all of our creative thoughts, ideas and talents together to establish some of the best events Ohio has to offer. How we got into the industry of event planning we all started our careers separately. Keinan Moton AKA K. Mo started as a hip hop artist, musician, and producer, and Duane Martin started out as a photography/videographer. We figured with the relationship we already shared and established with each other and the steadfast growth of our individual fanbases, us combined would be unstoppable. That’s when Tayon Smith come in to play. Before we got together as JUDO Tayon was acceptional at helping us coordinate and direct our individual events so we knew right away it would only be right for him to be part of JUDO alongside us. Shortly after, Dayzia Colifish AKA Dayz Myra, came into JUDO as a merchandise designer as well as an R&B artist. Dayzia sped up the process of having exclusive JUDO merchandise for events that we soon had in motion at the time.
The products and services that we provide are planning and throwing events that cater to the vibe and community of creatives. From the music down to the visual arts and fashion, our main objective for our consumers is a sense of family and homely vibes. We want to be sure that the people we reach view us as relatable and real because everyday we are all striving to bring the community together to better our environment and create a comfortable space for local creatives like ourselves to connect and flourish. As a team we are proud of the growth in JUDO. The failures and hardships that most brands and organizations like ours tend to face, we’ve been able to tackle head on and figure out how to move forward.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
In order to have a thriving creative ecosystem there needs to be a sense of fluid communication and togetherness within the community. We think the number one thing most creatives get wrong is taking on creative tasks on their own. Collaboration is key when in the industry of arts.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The moment all of us had to pivot in our career is in fact when we decided to establish JUDO and all agree to make this a thing. We already had a good amount on our plate dealing with our own lives businesses and ideas but we made a conscious decision to work even harder to bring forth the creative scene that we want to see in Ohio.
