We were lucky to catch up with Keidra Scott recently and have shared our conversation below.
Keidra , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
From a young age, my dreams have always exceeded my reality. Grade school is when I discovered my interest in art . Not just one facet of it, but everything having to do with self expression. I held on tightly to the fact that since 2nd grade, my life wouldn’t be regular. Fast forward to high school, I remember my junior year, I was sitting in class and my teacher was going over the definition of a “conglomerate” . A conglomerate is a corporation made up of several different, independent businesses. The moment I heard that, I knew that was for me. Coming from where I came from, I never seen it happen in my bloodline or any other environment before me . In my heart I knew that through my creativity, I would obtain these things.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello beautiful soul reading this . I am Keidra Scott. Like many creative people i stumbled in the dark until I found the light switch. The industry I’m in is very broad because it’s literally all things Art. God is blessing me to literally be myself and make money from it . I’m a Licensed Cosmetologist, have been for 10 years. I specialize in haircuts and am currently expanding my services . I own a treat business called Boujiee Baux (Box) Treats , I am a Music Artist , and Event Coordinator. Through each of these avenues i get to be me and live the purpose hat was predestined for my life . The problem that I pray is being solved by me pursuing these dreams is an issue of identity. Let me explain . There are so many Societal pressures pertaining to how we look, how we should live our lives , not to mention standards from family members or even how hard we may be on ourselves. There are all types of forces that can make us as humans, question our identity. I pray and hope that me being me, and by me pursuing things that others may deem impossible, would inspire that next beautiful person to be themselves unapologetically. You do you and somebody will rock with it! Even if they don’t rock with it DO IT FOR YOU .
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Let’s get honest . I like many have struggled with depression and anxiety. I remember being five and feeling depressed. Some might read this and say “ what do you have to be depressed about at five?” Depression wasn’t a choice. Depression was generational , depression took over the lives of those whom I loved . Not saying it was learned , what I’m saying is pay attention to your bloodline . Some of these issues we acquire are not just environmental, or circumstantial but also generational. I am now 29 and coping a lot better because prayer and I decided that my life wouldn’t stop because depression creeps in. I still have days where the sun is shining and it’s still grey to me . I still have days where my joy feels like it’s in a chokehold , and because my life is worth living , I’ll fight it every time . I will not robbed of what belongs to me . My life is worth living and so is yours.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The Goal of my creative journey is simple . Lead people to Christ, Be a resource , encourage others to be liberated by their own creativity no matter what and to be a safe space.
