We were lucky to catch up with Keidra Quillin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Keidra, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I chose learning the craft simply because while singing and writing songs came natural to me the technique and the science behind it didn’t.. I wrote my first song at about 7 years old. I later started writing again in middle school. I’m not sure if I knew that songs contained or required verses and chorus’s and bridges and breakdowns and so much more.. so I had to learn that. I had to learn what vocal range I sang in and if I was a soprano or an alto. I had to learn how to fill a song up with adlibs and harmonies and all of that.. i had to learn how to perform on stage with conference. having all of that on my mind I then learned that I HAD to learn the music business, And there’s not enough time on earth to fully explain that part. But I’m putting in the time because it’s mandatory to know because of so many bad deals you can easily get caught in. I’m still learning the music business and I’m still growing as not just a performer but a recording artist.
Keidra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Keidra. People who follow me and my music may know me as Keidraonstage. I discovered I loved singing and writing at 7 years old. I’m older now of course and I’ve had the pleasure of chasing my God given talents as an adult. I was not always able to do that when I was younger due to my upbringing and not having the funds to invest in myself. I sang in the church choir but it wasn’t a real choir to me lol!!! Not only that I didn’t have any musicians in my family or around my family from my knowledge that were fully invested in music and who could teach me anything. Some things would cross my desk like for instance my big brother Hakim (may he Rest In Peace) he was rapper and he was a poet but he was always in and out of jail or our house so I could never connect on that level. We later connected.. and now we have music together that I’m extremely grateful for. But I didn’t even know where to start for a very long time- but I’m on a roll now ;) I sing r&b, pop and I rap from time to time. I just love to express myself in writing honestly. Singing and rapping comes from me loving to show off my versatility and uniqueness. I believe anybody who loves music will appreciate what I bring to the table even if it’s not the lyrics at first, it may be the production/beat that I chose. What I want my future fans, followers or supporters to know is that my music is not negative or sad. I believe I have music that puts people in a possible mood. The goal is to give people hope, to inspire and in some songs to change the world. I pride myself on being my truest authentic self. Nobody can take what is inside of me. I do not follow the crowd or try to be anything that I am not. Why do that when there’s only one you!!?
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me I’d have to say having an impact on people who needs inspiration. I use the word inspiration a lot a lot lol because i understand the importance of playing your part while here on earth. I believe we are not just here for ourselves so while I’m here I don’t have any intent on giving anybody a hard time.. it is not my place to encourage anyone battling something negative to fall deeper in their mess. It’s a slap in Gods face to make another humans life difficult to be here when we know tables turn. We could easily be in someone else’s shoes. What we do to others could easily happen to us. So to inspire is merely doing your part. You may inspire someone to simply be an inspiration. As an artist who uses words that people are listening and are easily influenced by, It’s so easy to inspire.. so do it! inspire!!!
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Yes yes and yes!!! Lol the recording studio. How to record a song. How to sing in my range properly. Vocal coaches and just other musicians to brush up on what has always been inside of me. When I was younger I had none of this.. I mention this a lot as well because I want people to be inspired if it’s meant for them of course to see that I came in this game with nothing, no musician friends, no producer, no vocal knowledge and I still found a way to produce what God placed inside of me.. probably not when I wanted to but I believe Gods timing is on point..
