Keicia , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Consistency. The ability to stay consistent and to speak from your true authentic voice are pinnacles in become a successful entrepreneur. It’s a job, but never lose sight of your goals. Create your niche and execute.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Yes! My name is Keicia Shanta I am sustainable fashion content creator that covers lifestyle and clean beauty. My career in fashion began in 2012 with the fashion blog fashioncrushweekly. My blog was about my shopping trips to my local mall which quickly opened up doors for me to branch out into fashion styling.
I absolutely loved learning about seasonal trends so I began to work with my local media to create seasonal on air style segments.
Having forged all those relationships with the media I was tapped to join Magic City Fashion Week In Birmingham, Alabama and effortlessly fell into the roll as Public Relations Director.
I have had the opportunity to style for Saks Fifth Avenue , Belk, Nordstrom and Hibbett Sports.
I launched my sustainable Streetwear brand Smith & West last year and is currently about to drop our latest collection later this month.
I adapted a sustainable lifestyle in 2018 and I encourage my audience to buy better and use longer. support emerging fashion brands and designers, thrift and shop consignment.
Sustainability was so important to me that I wanted to learn more about it so during the pandemic I enrolled into the Fashion Sustainability Certificate program at the Institute Francais de la Mode powered by KERING.
I absolutely loved it and I learned so much information about eco brands and how to take better care of planet earth.
Consistency was key in getting to wear I am today and remember it doesn’t matter when you start , just start.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Covid 19 made the world stop. Literally. I had to completely pivot in my entire business model to have been able to survive it.
I had to become my own photographer. I had to learn lightroom and photoshop. I had to also learn how to edit and produce my own content.
I had to drop my idea of not participating in certain social media platforms during this time. For example, Tik Tok.
I swore I would never ever get a Tik Tok but if I wanted to reach my audience whom are on the platform, guess what? I got a Tik Tok!
We all had to pivot in some form or fashion during Covid but when I learned more about the skills listed above, paired with consistency bright me more brand deals and collaborations than I have ever had before.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yes. My children.
My children are my everything. When fashioncrush began my children were my models for my styling segments and fashion editorials. They started in the business with me and although they are older now and peruse their own creative businesses, they will forever be my driving force.
My children are also the reason I pursue sustainability. There is no planet B and I want to leave this world better for my families future generations.
