We recently connected with Kegham Hovsepian and have shared our conversation below.
Kegham, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project I worked on was one I had this past year, “Bubba’s Block Party.” The primary goal of this event was to welcome the NASCAR brand to the African American community via a concert and activations.
As a minority (Armenian-Palestinian American), I found that the mission was of utmost importance. Capturing the energy and the art of Bubba’s Block Party was one the most meaningful moments in my career as a photographer.
Proper representation of community and culture is vital to what I do. Inspired by my travels and diverse experiences, I have built a brand around the premise of capturing culture.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Kegham Hovsepian, a lifestyle/event and documentary photographer. I am the co-founder of On Three Photography, a minority-owned small business in Richmond, Virginia. My journey with photography started at 13 when my parents bought me my first video camera. My after-school activities involved making short films with my friends and being a general nuisance.
It was not until high school where I had a short stint with film photography did I realize I was interested more in still photography. With the lack of access to a dark room and the proper supplies, I slowly stepped away from the craft.
Fast forward to college I purchased my first DSLR and started creating stock imagery for projects I was assigned in class (I studied mass communications with a focus on Creative Advertising at Virginia Commonwealth University). Having an incredible support system of family, friends, and professors helped me pursue photography as more than a hobby and make it a career.
Using the experiences I had gained from my travels and my knowledge of the advertising world, I started freelancing and photographing local businesses/brands, eventually expanding into “On Three Photography.”
At On Three Photography, we pride ourselves on our ability to truly understand the culture/brand of who/what we are taking photos of.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Capturing that pinnacle moment that our clients can come back to and look at for years and feel the same emotion that they felt that day. Also, having a client show, display, or post what we captured for them with pride.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Creating impactful imagery that helps portray a brand’s purpose or evokes emotion would be my primary goal/mission for On Three Photography.
As for my creative journey, my goal is to capture the culture of whomever/whatever is in front of my camera and genuinely understand it.
