We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Keeyen Martin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Keeyen, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned starting in church and with instruction from my Grandmother. I honestly don’t think I would speed up my process. Everyones process is different and mine was essential to my development. Engaging, executing, and being in tune with myself I feel are the most essential skills I’ve learned. Currently know obstacles, just a balance of time and scheduling.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Keeyen Martin, a Professional Recording Artsist, Pianist, Singer, and Songwriter. I attended Morehouse College while on a Michael Jackson Scholarship. I received my BA in music vocal performance with a minor in piano. I graduated with honors and as a young professional musician and have had vast experience in the industry and teaching. I tour regularly as a performing Artist ranging from background to lead vocals. I have performed with an Array of Artist from Stevie Wonder to Fantasia. I also work with over 600 youth in the greater Atlanta,GA area, as a Vocal teaching Artist, instructing various classes on voice-music theory. I am most proud of remaining consistent and inspiring others to pursue their dreams.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Simply by showing up for them in every way. Whether it be financial, social, or otherwise, show up for those you support. It truly makes a difference.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my audience simply by being my authentic self and staying consistent. Nothing comes super fast but if you remain locked in with self you’ll be able to build something beautiful. People connect with authenticity, remember that.
