We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Keemorah Simon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Keemorah, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
From as far back as I could remember, I didn’t have an interest in becoming a cake artist professionally. While in high school, I completed a full course in cosmetology, in which I had to express my creative side artistically when I had to design hair and nails etc. However, becoming a flight attendant was my main interest until my fear of turbulence canceled out that interest as a full time career. In June of 2016, a few years after graduating from high school, I left my hometown of St. Croix USVI, to attend Hudson County Community College in New Jersey to major in Culinary Arts with a concentration in Baking and Pastry, given that I had a slight interest in baking. After completing some introductory courses, my passion for my current career was fueled and is still burning bright. The instruction I received from my instructors and chefs definitely impacted my journey in baking and pastry. On May 31, 2019, I graduated Magna Cum Laude and was excited to show the world what I had to offer. One of my first jobs in the baking field was at a supermarket in the bakery section where I was responsible for piping inscriptions on cakes. While being there I admired my coworkers decorating cakes and cupcakes because eventually that’s the direction I wanted to go. In my personal time after work, I purchased cake decorating supplies etc., to practice what I saw at work and also what I saw in videos that I watched to better my craft. A few years later, I started working at various bakeries in the New Jersey and New York area under the title of Production Baker advancing to Cake Decorator. I then decided that I wanted to further invest in myself and start my own business, so from that idea Kee’s Treasured Delights LLC was born and is thriving as a desired small business in the state of Louisiana.
Keemorah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
CEO: Keemorah Simon Business Name: Kee’s Treasured Delights LLC
Kee’s Treasured Delights LLC is a delectable cake business that offers a wide variety of sweets and treats. My business specializes in cakes, cupcakes, cookies, desserts, and many more. I also service customers who would like custom made treats. Custom treats are giftable and can be paired well with gift baskets, bouquets etc. I also offer catering options for dessert tables for any event.
What makes Kee’s Treasured Delights unique is that I provide impeccable customer service to all my customers. For example, one of the problems I am able to solve for my customers is being able to provide last minute assistance on fulfilling orders for treats and cakes. My daily goal is to provide a remarkable experience for my customers not only through the customer experience, but also through my delightful treats. Within my community, I participate in pop up shops and deliver treat samples to businesses for their enjoyment.
I am most proud of the business owner I am today. I am also proud of my excellence in delivering appetizing and delicious treats to my customers and how far I have reached with my brand. When I started cake decorating and baking for family members, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to develop my love for baking into a business. I just knew that I wanted to become my own boss one day. I eventually took a chance on myself and decided to share my craft and passion with the rest of the world. Throughout the trials and tribulations I’ve faced, I owe my persistence and ambition to the Lord for blessing me with a talent I can now bless others with.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson that I had to unlearn was “Owning a business is all a bed of roses.” I used to admire many business owners’ ambition and resilience and remember remarking to myself, “Well that looks easy enough to do.” Well after gaining this experience of owning my own business, my perspective has shifted drastically. I never thought of the countless days and hours that goes into owning a successful business. I also never imagined the days that quitting seemed more easier to do than to keep pushing forward. I also underestimated the financial aspect of first starting out as a business owner and how much work it takes to maintain your business financially. After unlearning this lesson, the hard way at times, I must say the adjustment period has now transitioned into a journey of growth and hard work that I’m most definitely proud of. Perseverance to be the best in my craft is one of my biggest motivators throughout this journey.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being the cake artist and owner of Kee’s Treasured Delights is getting wonderful feedback from my customers and potential clients that view my work. Constructive criticism is always also accepted. I use it as motivation to improve on treats or items that needs advancement. I also enjoy conversing with my customers after they’ve received their order to make sure my service and treats were satisfying.
