We were lucky to catch up with Keelyn Young recently and have shared our conversation below.
Keelyn, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Last year (November 2023) I took a big risk and switched from a Canon DSLR to a Nikon Mirrorless. I had gotten to the point in my photography career where I felt like I couldn’t advance or learn any more with the Canon that I had. So, I started doing my research into the different brands and what they could offer me. A good photography friend had a Nikon that she let me play around with on some of our content shoots we did together. It was almost like a truck hit me LOL. I had to make the switch. The quality that a Nikon gave me compared to what my Canon did was unbelievable. Now, I’m sure if I had a higher quality Canon to mess with I would think the same thing. I didn’t pull the trigger immediately on buying a Nikon, I did more research. I watched review videos and read the specs between the 2 brands and the cameras that were the same level. Ultimately, I decided to go with Nikon. It’s what my gut told me to do. I am so glad I did! My Nikon to this day has never let me down. I definitely had a learning curve, but I have gained so much from it. Best risk I have taken in with photography so far!

Keelyn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi, my name is Keelyn! I am Forever Young Photography!
I got into photography when I was in high school, it was for my yearbook class that I was an editor for. I helped with the yearbook for 2 years before moving (thus moving schools). I then set down the camera for a year or so before picking it back up again in college, and haven’t put it down since!
I offer all kids of services/session options ! Family, couples, portrait, boudoir, weddings…You name it, I do it!
I think what sets me apart is that I am very candid. I edit my photos in my style, maybe fix a pimple or stray hair but that’s it. I believe in capturing the real you. The real moment. In a world full of editing images/people so much so it looks fake, I stick to what is real, to the true beauty of the moment. That is also what I am most proud of.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Word of mouth! By far the best thing! If you look at my Instagram or Facebook, I don’t have a ton of followers. But, if I do a session for one family and they tag me or their friend asks who did their pictures, more than likely that friend will reach out!

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me its the steps that my clients take after I deliver their gallery. Its their response to seeing them how I see them! I love knowing that my photos are on someone wall, because I created that memory for them!
A second would be my return clients, there is no greater compliment to those who come back for more!
