Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Keely McCann. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Keely, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
I have been working in the social media space for almost 5 years now. When I got my first job as a social media manager I had just graduated from The University of Iowa with a degree in Health & Human Physiology & quickly realized working on the frontlines of healthcare was not for me. I wanted the opportunity to be creative every day, so I started my own business with my partner & I took over the creative, marketing & social media side of things. I absolutely loved it, creating moments, storytelling, learning about marketing through social media, editing photos & videos. I felt like I was really onto something. When my seasonal boat captaining business closed for the winter, I took a job as Social Media Manager for Heartwork Inspires, a motivational coaching company. It was there my initial idea sprouted; I could totally become a Social Media Coach even though I had never heard of one before I just needed to learn a bit more. After a couple years working as the Chief Marketing Officer at K&K Yachts, growing that company into Sunny’s Marina & taking on the CMO role there as well I started working with other companies like Boulevard Brewing Co and The MO Department of Tourism. It was then I felt like I was at the point where I knew enough about Social Media, Marketing & Content Creation to start teaching classes, taking on 1-1 consulting jobs & creating a new company for it all, Keely Media Consulting.
A few weeks before I was planning to launch Keely Media Consulting my good friend Mel, drone photographer & owner of Blue Boat Art, reached out to me about teaching an Instagram Reels class for her & some other local business owners. I had just spent the previous day laying out my business plans to my partner & now my first class was scheduled, it made me feel like I was in the right place, doing exactly what I’m meant to do right now.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Keely Media Consulting is all about making social media easier for business owners wanting to grow online. I find so much joy in the creative processes that come with this, from thinking up marketing plans to creating content I love connecting with a company & the people in it to find out what they’re really all about. I do this through social media analysis, 1-1 coaching & consulting.
I started out handling social media, marketing & content creation for companies I had built and am now consulting & coaching other brands, small business owners, and people who just want to learn more about socials in general. From K&K Yachts to Sunny’s Marina my brands have always been focused on a happy, endless summer lifestyle, but I also love diving into new brands. Some of my favorites I’ve worked with this past year are El Bandido Yankee Tequila when creating their EBY Yacht, shooting content of it & their signature cocktail The Blue-Eyed Bandit. As well as working with the Lake of the Ozarks CVB (Convention & Visitors Bureau) & The Missouri Department of Tourism to create boating & lake life content.
If you need help creating content (photos & videos to post), scheduling posts, creating marketing campaigns, Instagram & Facebook Ads, defining your brand, converting followers to customers, SEO, not sure where to even start? I’m your gal!
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
My favorite social media marketing campaign of 2022 was when I connected Sunny’s Marina with the official Lake of the Ozarks page. Lake of the Ozarks has more than 47,000 followers on Instagram & TikTok and focuses on showcasing life at Lake of the Ozarks, the perfect collaboration for Sunny’s Marina when their focus was booking more yacht charters at the LOZ this Summer. I decided giving away a Yacht Charter would be the best attention grabber to convert some LOZ followers into Sunny’s Marina customers & followers. We shot some videos & created graphics to announce the giveaway on Lake of the Ozark’s page as well as Sunny’s Marina. The giveaway only lasted 1 week but the results made us all extremely happy: nearly 9,000 entries, over 2,000 gained followers for Sunny’s Marina Instagram & another 2,000 new followers for their onsite tiki bar’s Instagram, The Dinghy! Sunny’s also saw a dramatic increase in the number of charters being booked online after they gained a larger audience, converting those followers into customers.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
