Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Keely Irvine. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Keely, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Thank you for having me! Honestly no, I didn’t think having a creative or artistic career was possible for me. I’ve always had artistic hobbies but I never saw myself turning any of them into a career because I was always taught it wasn’t realistic. I loved playing with makeup growing up but I got more interested with creative makeup toward the end of high school. I moved 5 hours away from my hometown for college and decided to start posting my makeup looks on social media. I wasn’t very good at it, I still needed a lot of practice. But I loved it so much. I spent my first year far away from home getting some missing science credits before becoming a full time dental hygiene student. With the start of covid, I found I had a lot of free time on my hands since I didn’t have to go anywhere. I practiced makeup in between those science classes, and I felt like my makeup skills were quickly improving. Eventually, I started my dental hygiene program and became extremely busy. I had already made a commitment to my content so I didn’t want to stop doing what I loved. It was also really nice to have a creative outlet during a stressful time with school, because I didn’t truly know if I even liked my college program enough to want to make it a career.
My social media platforms began to grow significantly around this time. I was creating makeup content all day in between online classes, clinics, and my part time job. Then, I would spend the rest of the night studying until 2am. I very quickly began to realize that being a dental hygiene student wasn’t making me happy, but all the effort I had been putting into makeup was. I dropped out of my program after a year and a half of battling with myself over whether I could have just done both. I could have, but dental hygiene wasn’t what I wanted to do. I finally became a full time content creator. I knew I wanted to purse content creation full time when it suddenly became so much more than just a silly creative outlet. It became realistic. I was able to grow a whole fan base and started making money from my content. Recently, I decided to go back to school this September to do a degree in digital media marketing. This way I can learn more aspects of the digital marketing world and not just the influencer side of it. I’m very excited to be going back to school for something I know is up my ally, while I continue to pursue content creation.
Keely, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Keely Irvine, I’m a 23 year old Canadian, self taught makeup artist, and digital creator on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. I first took an interest to makeup when I was 12. I grew up on the early days of YouTube where beauty gurus and DIY influencers were extremely popular. I learned a lot about makeup through that and it continued to be a passion of mine. Although it was a fun hobby, I didn’t take makeup seriously enough to think of it as a possible career path. I didn’t think I could ever make it as a content creator at all, like all the YouTubers I had grown up watching. Like I mentioned, I finally started posting my content on social media when I was starting college, and with extra time on my hands throughout covid, my skills quickly grew and so did my platforms.
I think I am known in the makeup community for having a unique video style which helped my platform take off. I am recognized by my original makeup looks and my makeup zodiac sign series which is where I cosplay as different characters and match the 12 zodiac signs to them. People can see what character they are based off their sign, it’s really fun! I enjoy cosplay, SFX, glam makeup, graphic liner, and keeping up with the new trends or makeup challenges. I feel like I have fun making all sorts of makeup content!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal that continues to drive my creative journey is my own happiness. Creative makeup is something I enjoy so much and I think it’s important that people continue to do things they love. I’m lucky to be doing something I love as a career. A lot of our life is spent working, and life is too short to work a job you don’t like.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
In the last four years I’ve grown quite a bit on social media making makeup content. I think the thing that helped me most was staying consistent and just having fun with it. If I was extremely busy with other aspects of my life, I pushed through and continued to post and do looks in between because I loved it so much and I was determined to grow my audience.
To grow your channels, you need to make the content that you would watch yourself. Be unique and inviting. Follow trends in your own way. If you don’t like the content you’re putting out on social media, and you’re only doing it for the views, or because other people prefer it, then you aren’t going to enjoy making content. Put out the kind of content you’d watch with passion and consistency, and the audience who likes that kind of content will stick with you.
