We caught up with the brilliant and insightful KD a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi KD, thanks for joining us today. Do you manage your own social media?

Social media is truly a monster that I am glad that I do not have to tackle alone. I can not express the level of gratitude I have for the social media manager title. Those folks are a God send! Social media is like a marketplace you cannot avoid these days, no matter if you are a brick and mortar business, you still need to have an online presence on social media.

KD, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

Sol-Era Brand is an inspirational eyewear and apparel brand focused on pushing people to see life from a different set of lenses. We are black female-led owned and operated. We offer unique styles that are top rated and of the highest quality of standard. Our goal is to become the new name in inspirational wear. Based out of Birmingham, AL ,we take pride in offering top tier customer service with a hint of down home southern charm.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?

I think 2020 was a pretty pivotal year for most folks but especially small business owners like myself. I started in 2019 and in less than a year my life as a business owner was turned upside down. Between supply and demand issues, shipping delays and having to shift my marketing strategy it was a swift adaptation in order to stay afloat. Having to rebrand my business is just as difficult as starting a new one. No more in person sales, which I excelled in, I had to learn ecommerce and social media ads. In order to truly find some success I had to pivot in the midst of racial tensions and a global pandemic. I’ve had some slow months in between then and now but I think that’s the beauty of entrepreneurship.

Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?

So I sell on my own branded website. I think sites like Etsy and Amazon are really cool and I even use another platform to sell my ebooks and other digital products but all in all having my own site gives me creative control of what I want my brand to portray. I can give my brand the aesthetic that I desire rather than a bland site link with other branding on it. Both platform options are beneficial to each brand for different reasons but ultimately a branded site was best for Sol-Era Brand.
