We recently connected with KC LaCourse and have shared our conversation below.
KC, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
In 2016 I was reading a Cowboys and Indian magazine, and noticed a western poem. I read it and wasn’t that impressed. I said to myself “I can do better than that “ I wrote my first cowboy/ western poem.
The writing and reciting to perform at cowboy venues became my next journey.
KC, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I wrote my first cowboy/ western poem in 2016 , a natural progression of wanting to recite my western poetry led me to look for cowboy poetry gatherings. I was hooked and continued researching articles about the pioneers and the cowboys of the old west.
Their struggles , life, love and loss.
My western poetry has taken me around the world , performing in Australia and Holland , also here in the states . As my recites continued , more poetry needed a place to fall ! Hence I have three CDs out and working on a fourth. I began a journey I had never thought about . I created a video showcase on all social media to present myself and other western/country singers and poets. Three years going strong and over three hundred performers have been on my “Hearts of the West” video showcase. Recognition has been a lot of hard work , all on my own dime. Financial gain is limited . But I keep punchin , looking for another idea or opportunity to be seen and heard . This journey has really been about two people , myself and the cowboy poet I have created ! On this journey I had challenges to overcome and the next logical direction to me was to become a motivational speaker. Combining my love for writing and reciting western poetry. I have overcome many challenges , a documented learning disability , breast cancer remission , addictions and coming out on the other side .Believing I have something more to share , I found my journey and maybe my story can help someone else. Seems to be a natural progression for me.
I created a non profit called “Find Your Journey” speaking at local high schools to teens and sharing my life , hoping to help them find their value and believe in themselves. Never give up , the miracle is just around the corner. Don’t give up , hold on one more day. You will find your journey !
How did you build your audience on social media?
Whatever your talent is , become visible ! Been and heard, When I started in 2016 I had no idea where I was going or what I was doing , but I knew it would find me. My style of poetry doesn’t always garner me invites to perform . So I have to create my own path
to open another door , Look for opportunities where I can excel , where I can help others , I have skills in computer graphics and art . I’m a natural born promotor. It’s a social media world now , it will find you
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Travel and meeting different cultures. I’ve gone to Amsterdam , Paris , London and The Great Barrier Reef , I’ve zip lined at Catalina And flown in a helicopter over the barrier Reef , seen the Sydney Opera House. Walked over the famous Beatles crosswalk ,
Been to Piccadilly Circus , the Eiffel Tower
Monmarte , it’s all so beautiful
