Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kazoua Lor. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kazoua, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
When I think about the word “Rise”, I think about the confidence that people have when they are rising on up. I want to give all of my clients, new or old, the chance to boost their confidence with their hair. One day, I will open up my own salon with my dream team. Hence, why I called my business Rise Hair & Co.

Kazoua, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started out by watching “how to” updos on YouTube in high-school. Of course I did all of the hairstyles on myself first and then I started doing my classmates hair. That’s when I knew that I wanted to pursue hair. What I am most proud of is not giving up. I was not good with women’s hair at all. That’s why I went into barbering for 3 years. Doing women’s hair didn’t click for me until 6 years later. Now, I love doing blondes. I am currently certified in Invisible Bead Extensions, and would love to switch over to an Extensions only salon one day.

Have you ever had to pivot?
There are a few times I had to pivot, but my most recent one is when I outgrew my environment. I loved the place that I was at and the people who I worked alongside with. I was also freshly certified with my handtied extensions method. A part of me wanted privacy, however, a part of me was fine with where I was. It was just a matter of finding a place and moving. Which I did and is now in my own suite.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Some people were gifted to be great with hair from the start, some had to make plenty of mistakes in order to learn and grow into the stylist they are today. Like I’ve said before, it took me 6 years to finally understand coloring hair. If I were to quit when the times were tough, I would’ve never been where I am today.
