We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful KAYWON. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with KAYWON below.
KAYWON, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My latest and most meaningful project I’ve created so far is my EP B.R.A.T (Black Rich and Talented)
It was my journey in to coming in to me; Figuring out who I am in this lonely and unpredictable place we call home. Battling my own vices and obstacles at the time I put every thing I had in to crafting the songs. Each piece was inspired by true events and my feelings. I took time to make the production reflect that. At the time I was working 3 jobs in production because I was determined to keep myself around music and livelihood, I had to live life the way I wanted – I thought that was the most rockstar thing I could do. Though I had 16 hour days I still made time for the music and the world repaid that to me. Giving me my charm B.R.A.T and I enjoy sharing it with everyone who will listen ya know.
KAYWON, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well as far as performance goes I started when I was real young in the choir and what not. A couple rhymes I wrote by myself and with my cousins as I grew a little older. It didn’t get much further until I that game guitar hero world tour came out. Me and my brother would play that everyday, then go find the music later to listen. I fell in love with the idea of playing guitar in a band so I eventually taught myself how to play it. I found 2 homies and my brother to play with and from that point my musical journey really began. I spent time playing with punk and rap groups in Baltimore as well as GoGo bands in DC. My band separated and I began to teach myself to produce right after. From there I went to school for Audio engineering where I sharpened my producing skills and learned my way around the studio. After years of honing my skills from performing, recording, mixing, and producing I finally made my first official project B.R.A.T.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
This is exactly what I want, it’s like waking up everyday in a video game. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose but it’s the game you wanna play. That makes me happy. That’s what I aim for ultimately, it’s happiness. I’m grateful for this I truly am.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
One day I wanna make these things called GWUG towers, a YMCA for music and arts. I remember wanting to learn to play piano so bad, but it wasn’t possible. Music and the arts will always be possible with GWUG towers around.
