We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kayshia Tagumasi. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kayshia below.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Kayshia and I am the owner of Coastal Beauty Salon located in Sacramento, CA. I started off as a freelance makeup artist, traveling to my clients to provide makeup services to them on their wedding day. I attended beauty school and studied Esthetics in 2015 and started my first, licensed Beauty business providing all things beauty, skincare, lashes, and makeup application. I decided to expand my business by going back to beauty school in 2020 to retain my Cosmetology License so that I can offer more beauty services and have a home base for my business versus traveling all the time. After renting a chair in a salon and single suite for a few years, I finally made the jump to own a small, 4 chair salon – hence, Coastal Beauty Salon.
Getting here was not an easy journey. Not only did I have to learn and start a business with minimal guidance and funds, but also had to start over during/after the pandemic. The resilience it takes to believe that your work ethic will lead you down the path you dream of is easier said than done. Even when I thought I was stagnant, I would still do SOMETHING to improve my skills, my business, and my education. I quickly learned that consistency is key when it comes to owning a business. If you get up every day, show up for yourself by putting in the work, and truly hone in on your craft – the clientele will grow and the money will follow.
At Coastal Beauty, we offer a variety of services such as hair cuts, hair treatments, hair coloring, hair extensions, hair design/styling, and makeup services. We do not believe that beauty is a “one size fits all” type of service and we truly perfect every session by customizing the service to the client’s style and liking. We want women to show up as themselves, be comfortable in their own skin & hair, and ultimately leave our salon feeling beautiful and confident.
I am proud of myself for never giving up, even when it seemed easier to quit. Remember that when it gets hard, that’s when it’s going to get better and hard situations make for a resourceful business owner. Because of my hardship, I continue to figure out the little hiccups along the way and I KNOW that I am secure as long as I keep learning and investing back into my business to be better than I was yesterday. When you walk into Coastal Beauty. I want you to feel at home, like you’re having the best girls’ day, leave all of your troubles and worries at the door, and leave our space feeling inspired, renewed, and ready to take on the rest of your day.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I was raised to be a “model citizen”. Never be too loud, never stand out too much, don’t speak your mind or draw too much attention to yourself, do good in school, get amazing grades, get into a good college, go be a doctor, pick a hospital to work for, and then stay there until retirement. I had to learn how to carry on that amazing work ethic and consistency while unlearning that my dreams, aspirations. happiness, and everything great that made me who I am was “too much”. That the things I wanted in life was too far fetched and out of my reach because I am a first generation Hmong American with no generational wealth and that the lifestyle I dreamt of was “too much” for our culture. I had to learn how to be confident in saying, “THIS is what I want in my life and THIS is what I WANT to do with my life”. I had to undo the mental toll and block that my friends’ and family’s words of doubt had on me. It put fear in me and held me back from starting my business for a few years and then when I actually started it, the fear made me constantly look for “another opportunity”. I had to learn how to “do it afraid” and face every challenge head on while cheering for myself. Unlearning generational trauma and self doubt from others surrounding me was one of the biggest hurdles in entrepreneurship, but it was the MOST important one to unlearn in order to become successful.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
In regards to managing a team and maintaining high morale, it is all about doing things with integrity and transparency. Trust only happens when you can prove to your team that you are a leader who they can trust to be resourceful, help them grow, and provide them with the love and support that I, myself, needed at one point during my early years of entrepreneurship. It’s about wanting the best for your team so that your team can show up as their best selves every day to represent your brand in it’s truest and happiest form. In return, a solid team brings in a solid clientele and the best comments we get is when someone in our chair mentions the good aura and vibes we emit in our salon. A happy, healthy, and organized work environment with lots of communication and healthy boundaries for one another is key to managing a team.
