We were lucky to catch up with Kayos recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kayos, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
I believe one of the biggest challenges with the current music industry especially for independent artists has to be the lack of probability from streaming services. Coming from an Independent Artist it’s definitely frustrating and challenging to be successful because you will almost need a million streams just to make a few thousand dollars, that would probably only cover the expenses of creating a project. I definitely hope that Congress with the help of Music Executives can somehow figure out a better way for artists to achieve some level of personal financial success when dealing with streaming.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been a music lover pretty much all my life, as a young kid I played the alto and baritone saxophone as well as the drums. It wasn’t until I was an early teen probably 13 when I found a passion for writing hip-hop music. As a teenager I would perform at local skating rinks and do auditions with hopes of gaining national success with my talent. In the early-90s one of the most memorable highlights was when I got the opportunity to meet the late legendary rap artist Eazy-E when they made a stop in St. Louis, it was very inspiring for me at the time as a youngster because they were having a meet and greet in my neighborhood at Streetside Records which was one of the music stores in the Delmar Loop in University City at the time, I thought this could be my big break, I showed up and got in line and as my turn came I got an autographed picture and managed to get a word in with Eazy-E who told me to talk to DJ Yella who was also there, they actually gave me their number well then pager number to reach out to them while they were in town but me being a kid not knowing how to really operate a pager… let’s just say we’ll never know what could have come of that opportunity but it was definitely a memorable experience and opportunity. Later in life as a young adult in my 20’s in St. Louis, there were a few artists getting big breaks and the city was emerging onto the national scene with the hip-hop culture which enabled me to network and learn a lot about the industry at that time. Equipped with that knowledge and a few connections that were available I decided to start an entertainment company “Big Focus Inc.” in which me and fellow business partners were able to be somewhat successful in reaching our goals with artist development. Fast forward in time artist development is still my main focus with my newly formed entity Kayos Entertainment, LLC with the same goal of successfully promoting talent worldwide. I think the uniqueness in my company is that we not only deal with music artists but visual artists as well and the fact that we have decades of personal experience and knowledge to offer as well as proven ability.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the fact that I can create and share something worldwide that can touch, motivate and inspire people in different ways from all walks of life.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think networking which in my case is always continuous is one of the biggest things that has helped me build my reputation in this market. I have found that there is an unmeasurable amount of gain achieved when networking within a diverse network.
