We recently connected with Kayo SinnedOut and have shared our conversation below.
Kayo, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the toughest things about entrepreneurship is that there is almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
A problem that I personally faced in my business is being consistent and staying motivated. This is something I think every creative goes through at least once in the journey and it could be for different reasons. Someone bigger than you might be stealing your designs or way of creating or you are just having a creative lag and can’t come up with any ideas. The way I go about it is instead of looking at those things as bad and bringing me down, I use it as motivation that i’m doing the right thing. Also sometimes we need a little break to reset and gather our minds together. A break is never bad unless you gain nothing from it.

Kayo, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Kayo, i’m a young creative director and artist. I started my brand SinnedOut as a way for me to be able to express the emotions or aspirations I feel through art. SinnedOut isn’t a name just tied to one form of art or to one idea. I eventually want to turn this into a multiple service and product company and collective. As of right now I am working on releasing collections featuring different pieces. Currently I just released my T-Shirt collection titled “Rebel Emotions” where the pieces establish feelings that the youth in the underground scene and in general typically feel very often. I wanted to be able to show that it is ok to feel that way and that they aren’t the only one. Whenever you wear a SinnedOut piece you feel like yourself. I am only just getting back started, I have so much in store the the people who support me and have gotten me thus far to where I am now as well as all the future people who are soon to come.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Honestly I feel like me just being able to stay original while still making quality clothing is what helps me build more of a solid reputation within clothing. I am able to make pieces that people can heavily relate to in a way that they haven’t seen before. This goes hand in hand with just always having good and positive energy. I try to show as much love as I can to my peers and never take or see anything as a competition. If anything it would be a friendly mutual one.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
A lot of people have stole my designs and tried to copy me. People with way bigger platforms and followers than me, (I won’t say any names). In the beginning it used to bring me down and almost made me want to stop doing everything in general. I always thought “what is the point if they’re just gonna take it” All in all I never made that kill my motivation or spirit and I never stopped. In situations like that I use it as motivation to keep going and to go even harder. No one can replicate anything better than the originator and it’s been paying off well. I’ve gained a lot of respect from people due to this and use it as a reminder to never stop.
