We were lucky to catch up with Kaylynn Patterson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kaylynn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
As a nail tech with over 13 years experience. I would keep seeing people get fungus and other issues from Pedicure who were not sanitizing and taking care of peoples feet properly. As a licensed CNA going from working in care, facilities and the hospital, I would see peoples feet in the most horrendous shape possible. As a Nail Tech I dived into Medical pedicures and spent three years learning from podiatrist, medical professionals and other medical pedicures, that’s when I came up with my own medical Pedicure version to help people not only look great, but feel comfortable and confident in their feet, knowing that they’re not going to be in pain anymore. I always tell my clients you can go put new tires on your car, but you cannot put new fee on yourself. Pedicures are not a luxury. They are a necessity and we should take care of our feet so my goal for southern Oregon is to change the way people see pedicures. At our salon, we don’t focus on the fluff and buff we focus on the overall health of your toenails and feet. Not only do we take care of our clients feet, but we also teach him how to do home care in between their appointments to get their feet on the right track so they’re more comfortable.
I spent hundreds and hundreds of hours researching the best medical Pedicure procedure possible. I would spend countless night staying up late at night researching watching online medical professionals and doing tons of research on multiple practices for the feet. Let’s just say I didn’t sleep very much for about a year
I knew when it came to the set up it had to be way more than just your simple Pedicure set up. Our Medical pedicures are waterless with waterless pedicures. You have to make sure that the dust from the feet you’re not inhaling so we came up with a foot extractor for dust. We had to raise them up higher so we’re not bent over breaking our backs and so the clients are also comfortable as well along with that I have been in constant contact with professional foot care products gehwol and I had taken all of their extra training that they have given me and implemented their products in with my services.
Fast-forward to six months and I now have another Nail Tech working underneath me on a commission basis and we are both doing great and very busy in our small town. People are starting to realize what a pedicure is actually for. Focusing on the overall health of your feet which, as to the overall health of your whole body.

Kaylynn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
I started doing nails when I was 19 years old without a license at home because I couldn’t afford to pay for my own now so I practice on myself first. My friends began to see how much they liked the nails I was doing on myself and kept asking me to do theirs so it quickly turned into a side hustle at home and within three months I had about 30 clients coming to my house I did that for about two years and my friends kept pushing me to go to Nail school, but I was too afraid because I never did well in high school. I didn’t think I would pass. Fast forward into Nail school. I was one of the top five in my class and I aced all of my classes graduated on time. I only missed two days the whole time I was in Nail school past my skateboards on the first time, and I went out on my own into a salon right away.
The first Salon I went into was not the best because the owner took all the walk-ins so I quickly realized I needed to change directions. I went to work for a high-end Spa with only 35% commission for about one year I did that and then I realized I just needed to open up my own salon fast-forward to three years after graduating Nail school. I open up my own salon and I had 12 girls renting from me.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
After having my Salon for several years, I went through a divorce when my baby was only 10 months old. That was a very hard time for me as she was so young and I was trying to run a business with so many people working for me. I decided to sell the salon and go into property management and then pandemic hit and I started at Nails again every time I think I’m going to give up nails I always end up doing nails. It’s my passion and I love taking care of people. It’s where I belong now I work in a salon suite and I have one girl working commission for me and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. I make way more money now than I ever have.
