We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kaylyn Schmer, IIDA, LEED AP BD+C, NCIDQ. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kaylyn below.
Hi Kaylyn, thanks for joining us today. Do you have any thoughts about how to create a more inclusive workplace?
Everyone deserves to have a comfortable, supportive, and effective workspace. One size doesn’t fit all, but there are many ways design can create an inclusive environment. Composition Creative designs inclusive workplaces through welcoming atmospheres, intuitive layouts and functions, supportive private spaces, access to nature, and ample daylight.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m Kaylyn, Founder and CEO of Composition Creative, LLC, a Multidisciplinary Design Studio based in Denver, Colorado. I’m a licensed Interior Designer (NCIDQ), a professional member of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), and a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional with a Building Design and Construction Specialty (LEED AP BD+C). I founded Composition Creative (formerly Bristle + Bauble) in 2018 after realizing I could offer a wider range of integrated solutions, and a more focused approach, than what a typical design studio would provide. As a one-person team, I carry each design from concept to completion. Rather than diluting the process by passing the work from team to team, having one point of contact means your project’s goals are always in the forefront. From photography to systemic analysis, and everything in between, each deliverable is the result of my meticulous methods.
I have been passionate about design from a young age; I always knew I wanted to be a designer. In my early teens, I researched the path to becoming a licensed Interior Designer, and selected Colorado State University to pursue my Bachelor of Science Interior Design degree. Over the course of my education and career, I have honed my Interior Architecture and Brand Identity skills, and now help clients design every touchpoint of their business or home. I create thoughtful, efficient, and composed designs that help my clients reach their goals. I offer a broad range of services, including creating functional interior layouts for commercial and residential clients, developing e-commerce solutions, designing brand identities, and developing social media strategies.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is seeing design come to life. I start with one-on-one conversations with my clients to understand their journey, passions, goals, and pain points. From there, I distill the most effective design solution that achieves their goals and meets my exacting standards. One of my greatest joys is seeing my clients flourishing, even months or years after our engagement. When clients place their full trust in me, my work, and my process, the results always exceed expectations.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
“The customer is always right.” I challenge my clients to think outside of their preconceived notions of what is and what can be. My role as a designer and partner for my clients is to create the best possible solutions for their projects- meaning I stay away from ‘trends’ and strive for timeless design. I ask questions, propose unexpected ideas, and push for articulated reasoning behind client desires and direction. My goal is to build a trusted and lasting partnership with my clients – your success is my success. If you’re working with Composition Creative, you’re trusting me to make the right choices for your project. The customer may not always be right, but your final product will be.
