We were lucky to catch up with Kaylyn Leslie recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kaylyn, appreciate you joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think the word “success” is defined differently by everyone, so what it takes to be successful will differ from person to person.
For me, I think successful people are those that have a gift for adaptation in every aspect and on all levels. If you can take whatever life throws at you and continuously make it work in your favor…you are successful. Successful people are those that take problems and focus on solutions.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I love talking about how 🌺Made By Marie🌺 was created because it was honestly accidental. My entire life, I struggled with finding products that were completely organic for my hair and skin. In highschool I started making my own skin care products using some of my grandmothers ancient recipes with ingredients straight out of her kitchen. For about 6 years I only used my products and was starting to get alot of questions on how I maintain such clear and bright skin. I began sharing my secrets with close friends and family, but that wasn’t enough. People wanted to know exactly what I was using.
After I received my Bachelors in Communication and Nutrition from Belmont University, I decided to become a cosmetologist. I wanted to learn everything there is to know about hair and skin so I could help the people around me create an organic product regimen.
Once I became a licensed Cosmetologist and with the the help of my mother, grandmother, and great aunt, I then created 🌺 Made By Marie🌺 with the intent to nurture and highlight the natural you. I strive to maintain an organic foundation and stick to the basics of cosmetology. Since 2020 I have built an amazing clientele as a hairstylist, and have shipped my skin care products all over the US including Hawaii.
I’m so grateful to be in the position to truly do what I love and provide knowledgeable advice to the people around me.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think people can always tell when you really enjoy something versus when you’re just trying to keep up appearances. Since I was about 5 I’ve always been into makeup, hair, fashion, and skincare so people have always asked for my opinion regarding anything beauty related. I think now that I’m a licensed cosmetologist and have a steadily growing business, people respect and recognize how long I’ve been working to get where I am now, and how deep my passion runs. My consistency within the beauty world has really helped build my reputation because my clients trust my many years of experience.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I would say staying up to date on trends and seasons have helped me grow the most clientele. For example: I like to offer deals and sales around major holidays and school schedules. Everyone loves a good sale 😊 I always like to constantly research pop culture and social trends like hair styles, scents for skin care, what clothing trends are in, and what peaks peoples interest. Even if you’re not ahead of the curve, flowing with the curve will always bring in new and fresh clientele.
