We recently connected with Kaylon Adudu-oke and have shared our conversation below.
Kaylon, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
I manage my own social media. I believe as a fresh starting business, it is okay to do everything yourself, through the trial and error, you don’t have to rush the process… when things start to move at a certain pace, you then can invite a team in, learn your ability and skill first.. I’ve actually motivated myself seeing all the ups and downs running a business social media alone. Do your research and keep going no matter what ! It is better not having so many voices in your ear vs. many voices telling you this or that. I made the decision to start alone so that I could build up on how I want the future business to flourish, it has been a great experience for me, I’ve tried so many ideas, I create creative content that I personally believe is eye catching and I just love the freedom of no one over stepping boundaries and getting to know my inner creative side. I say for all and any start up business, few years in business.. just keep swimming “as dory would say” don’t beat yourself up if it doesn’t turn out the way you visioned it, It will all come into place, have faith behind your business.. you got this ! You won’t know what to fix or how to fix an error, if you don’t go through the trial.
Kaylon, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Kaylon Adudu- oke, owner of Butter Me Down By Kay Llc. I would say I am just an all around fun spirit, my personality is all around GREAT! I started my business back in 2020 of October. I specialize in skin products for the body, sugar scrubs, body butter, bath salts, lip scrubs and more. I have been in business for 2 years now. I started my business because I was tired of buying watery lotions that did nothing for my skin, I only started with body butter, I had many many trial and error but I didn’t let that stop me. I finally got my body butter to the texture I loved and the shine I desired, ASH BE GONE !! Once I got the body butter down, I knew I wanted more. Sales were going great but it just felt like something was missing, so I then started making body sugar scrubs (which are my best sellers) and I proceeded with more products, I saw my business as a skincare line but I wanted to make it fun for my customers, so I decided to sale over 10 scents, I wanted to give my customers many fun scents to choose from, I am most proud of my advertising and content. I’ve always been good behind the lenses but getting to know your creative side, brings out more!! What I think sets me apart from others is that I truly make my products out of love, it is not about how pretty the product looks, it’s about the ingredients and how they actually benefit you. I specialize in helping others with dry skin, irritation, hyperpigmentation, eczema and so much more. I go beyond to satisfy my customers. I have shipped to many states but I dream one day to have a worldwide business and store front . Butter Me Down By Kay was created from the heart and I am so excited to continue to create products. I am so grateful for my 2 years of business and hope to gain for customers.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Believe it or not, I started out with no money… I was in school, unemployed and I knew I wanted to work for myself and no one else. Don’t let people make you feel that you always have to start out with thousands of dollars, when I started, I bought 5 jars and did a sample run, that sample run turned into tips and those tips turned into future customers, before you knew it, I had people ordering from every direction. Never be discouraged, it will happen at the right time always !!! Once you hit your first thousand, go ahead and open a business account, it is way easier to balance your money.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my audience on social media by networking, I even sent a few dms to a few people asking them to try my products and shout me out. I passed out business cards and even started using more hashtags under the field of my products (they truly helped) !!!
