We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kaylie Miller a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kaylie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
My industry can be a little controversial. Being a business coach & educator, I get to be in an online space with so many amazing & admirable educators. But I will say it’s not always uplifting being in this space. But I am a big believer in supporting that we all have different approaches with how we create a sense of community, teach, and educate others. One of the main reasons I became a business coach is due to how I was treated by other educators in the past. Before starting Elevated Education, I had my wedding photography business for 4 years (and I still have that photo company to this day, it’s my baby haha) but anyways, my main point is that throughout those 4 years, I invested tens of thousands of dollars in other educational experiences, mentorships, masterminds, courses, etc. And very few of my investments actually felt worth my money spent. I noticed that a lot of creators & educators were simply in it for the money & didn’t seem to care about whether or not their students really got the most out of their offers. So am I saying that everyone who’s an educator in the business world is like that? Absolutely not. But I did learn the hard way that a lot of the people I looked up to for so many years weren’t running the kind of business I thought they were. So when I started EEC, I promised myself that I would always prioritize community & have a different approach. Yes, I am a coach & educator, but I also wanted the people I work with to feel heard, understood, prioritized, safe, and excited to grow their businesses & take on new challenges vs. feeling like they “had to.” Two things I don’t do with my business that can be different from my industry standard are: (1) I don’t cold message (2) I don’t pressure to close. I have joined offers/programs in the past where it felt like this big sales pitch & if I didn’t say yes in that moment then my business would miss out on this big opportunity. I have been on both sides. So I don’t ever pressure my audience or community if they say “no” to my programs or courses. I don’t expect anyone to buy from me. My main goal is to create a safe space that is welcoming, encouraging & to be more than a coach.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
If we haven’t met before, my name is Kaylie! I am a 24 year old business owner, running 2 companies I started from scratch. I am both a wedding photographer based in Scottsdale, AZ and a business coach & educator for service based businesses! Honestly business ownership was a route I gave myself when I was 7 years old & was terrified to do anything else with my life. I got my BS in finance, but my goal was to always turn one of my many passions into a full time income. My goal isn’t to make a million bucks, but to genuinely be happy. And that’s my mission with what I do, to spread happiness and put smiles on peoples’ faces! I help service providers grow their businesses while falling back in love with the process. My specialty lies in digital marketing, sales & client conversions, and business strategy. Through that I help my clients & students book more of their dream clients by creating marketing strategies that are built on sustainable results & an approach that feels right to them!

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I am more of a believer that you don’t need a large audience, but the right audience. I grew my photography business pretty quickly once I relocated to Arizona. I grew my Instagram account to 16k followers, grew my Pinterest to 200k monthly viewers in just a few months, and ranked my website on Google to show up on the first page for all of my chosen keywords. Growing to those numbers themselves was not easy, some happened easier than others. But after all of it, I learned that it doesn’t matter if you have 100k followers or 1,000 followers on any platform, if those people don’t care about what you offer, they’re not going to make a move. Whether it’s them caring about your impact, your story, or your services… you need to build an audience that is equally as excited to be in your space in order to create any momentum. So my advice to people trying to build their social media presence isn’t to focus on the number of followers you have, but the number of people you’re impacting. Because when you build a community that feels inspired, empowered, and heard… that’s when you start to see results no matter what your goal is.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I keep in touch with clients through social media, email, and text. I make it very known that I am an open book and am here to listen to anything and everything my clients and audience wants to share. I know what its like to do everything on your own and not have someone to talk to about business and just life in general. So no matter what the struggle, question, feeling or thought may be, I preach to my community that my door is always open. As far as keeping in touch with clients, I keep in touch with them over social media. I love watching their progress and cheering them on when I see them applying the material they learned throughout our time working together.
