We were lucky to catch up with Kayleigh Carter recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kayleigh, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Being a business owner is a lot of hard work. I have one employee so maintaining the business on a day to day is really at the hands of myself and my assistant. There really is no such thing as delegating work because it is truly my responsibility.
On one hand, a “regular” job would seemingly be easier but I don’t believe that was my calling and that is keeps me motivated and happy in what I do. I know that everyday when I’m in my salon, there is an impact I am giving to the world and my clients. I feel a sense of importance with such a huge responsibility.
I wouldn’t change what I do if life depended on it!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Kayleigh Carter and my passion for making people look and feel good about themselves began at a very young age. I received my hair license as a senior in high school and continued to grow my craft throughout college!
Simplyslayed started as a blog nearly 10 years ago when I moved to Atlanta. I got my first salon suite a few months after having my first child 8 years ago and it’s grown tremendously over the last near decade.
Everyday, I service between 6-10 clients and I think it’s become more than just about hair. While I know my clients appreciate my expertise on growing and maintaining their hair, I am certain they support my business because of who I am and how I make them feel. We’re like family!
I am most proud that I have had the ability to grow my business from nothing. Moving to Atlanta and not knowing what the future held, I can say I’ve really put my heart and soul into making my dreams come true. Impacting a variety of different women from the inside out.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
5 years ago when my youngest daughter was just 8 months old, I went through the hardest time of my life. A divorce. When I felt like I had it all, everything I worked for came crashing down! I wanted to give up on everything. The one thing that kept me going was my children. I knew they deserved a mother they could look up to and be proud of. That drove me to continue to fight for what I knew God needed from me. A strong women who could impact others and motivate them to keep going despite life’s trials and tribulations.
My life has continued to move in the most positive direction. I learned that a decoy is not a NO to life. Minor set backs are made for major come backs! Within that time, I grew closer to my kids, my clients, my peers and my family. I looked to them for my strength to keep going. To continue growing.
Within this time, my business continued to flourish… I secured a job working on a major television network and my salon continued to grow with now over 1,000 clients in my database. I say all this to say, NEVER GIVE UP!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Building a good reputation in business is simple… DO GOOD WORK!
If you only have five clients/customers, always show up. Be on!!!! Give your best. If those five people go out and just one person compliments your work on those initial five clients, you’re guaranteed to land at least two of those people. All it takes is you. Stay consistent and do the work! Give it all you’ve got!
