We recently connected with Kaylee White and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kaylee thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
As I grew up, taking risks meant so many different things. All of them were right…in the moment.
I’m 24 years old (25 in May) and I can tell you what “risks”means for me now. Being big. I remember being a little girl being so afraid to speak. Afraid to disagree, to be difficult. Life has a way of challenging your beliefs because after a lot of living and learning, I began to understand truly what risks meant. Taking risks doesn’t have to mean jumping out of an airplane, it means speaking up in the moment your feel something. It means not shoving things in the back of your throat to simmer and dwell. You see something, you say something. When I reflect on who I admire, who I trust, I think of people who aren’t afraid to speak their mind. Taking risks means having integrity, being brave.
Bravery is something I have struggled with my entire life, and finally I’m braver than what I used to be. I can trust myself with difficult situations because I take risks by speaking up no matter how everyone else may react. Through these experiences I have learned more of who I am and what I like. My craft gets better and better the more I practice taking risks. To become brave you must do what makes you scared, realizing nothing should change who you are. Bravery is doing it while scared.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Kaylee White and I introduce myself as TheBlack Unicorn because it allows me to be rare, bold, and beautiful loudly. I built a TikTok platform from the ground up from 0- 28k currently. I record makeup tutorials and created a series called Beauty in Poetry. This series merges my love for the makeup process and spoken word. Which is another passion I utilize to express my journey. I’ve come from depression, anxiety, suicide, and so much more. My makeup style is recognizable everywhere and anywhere. I receive so much love from others for creating makeup looks true to who I am. I advocate for darker skin black women and those who are underrepresented.
I continue to bring my community along with me as I go through life as a black unicorn

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the overwhelming community you gain. Creatives have a way of making people look within themselves and through that you.l meet people who are passionate about honesty and truth.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
To best support creatives society should practice grace. We expect creatives to everything all at once and perfect! However, we don’t support creatives as much when we are going through the process. We are respected once finished. I believe as a society we should give creatives more room to make mistakes and understand/figure out who we are and what we create. Creatives make the world go round, we keep people uplifted during trying times, and we share our stories. Society loves us until it is time to financially, physical support creatives.
