Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kaylee Ruiz. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Kaylee thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Patience and practice is obviously important, but it’s easy to be discouraged in the beginning. I think using good references will make good art. If you surround yourself with quality influences and artists you admire, then you’ll subconsciously have a better eye for design and style. I wish I would have spent more time studying good design and practicing basic skills like proportion, perspective, typography, etc. I think you have to like the less-glamorous parts of the creative process if you want to improve.

Kaylee, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a designer! I’m finishing my studies in animation & motion design, learning branding design in an internship with Sarankco: Creative Studio, and practicing illustration in my free time. I feel most proud of illustration work, since it’s something I pursued for my own enjoyment and not for money or a career. I think I’ll be illustrating and animating my whole life, even if not for a job. Things like designing movie posters, book illustrations, and effects animations are what I do for fun practice. For work, I’m excited to learn more about motion and graphic design.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
In animation, I think you can learn so much from collecting samples that impress you and scrubbing through each frame individually. Especially in 2D animation, taking clips of character or effects animation into your camera roll and just analyzing each drawing helps so much more than hearing an explanation.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I have a lot of future goals, not many of them are related to one another. I would love to illustrate a book, either a children’s book or poetry. I’d love to design a movie poster, or a book/album cover. I’d love to animate a music video or even just a really cool motion graphic. There are also tons of creative skills I want to improve at, like typography design or animation.
