We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kaylee Blubaugh a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kaylee, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
For many years I held marketing leadership roles in corporations and despite enjoying my time in these roles, I always found myself wanting to make more of an impact and help more companies. I found myself constantly picking up freelance marketing jobs in addition to my full-time roles, With the fulfillment that came from helping these companies, along with the flexibility and success of my freelance work, I decided to start my own company. With my business, Blu Insight, I am now able to help other entrepreneurs and small businesses turn their own visions into reality.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Small businesses and startups tend to have smaller budgets, and owners are overwhelmed by all the areas that they think their budget needs to cover. At Blu Insight, we strive to simplify the marketing world for our clients by focusing on what areas are most important for their unique industry and target market. Our advice is tailored to each client’s budget, and we help them decide where and how to invest their money to maximize their return. We assist our clients in any capacity needed, whether it’s training for them to execute the plan on their own, completing the work for them, or a combination of both!

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Prior to Covid-19, we were growing at a rapid rate. In fact, we were growing so fast that we were actually turning away clients while we worked on scaling our operations. Once the pandemic began, there was a wide range of shutdowns. Unfortunately, many of our clients at the time were those affected the most. All of our restaurant, yoga studio, and dentist clients were forced to shut down their businesses for a period of time. As a consequence of these unfortunate circumstances, these clients were unable to gain any revenue and had no services to promote at the time, dwindling their marketing budgets to nothing.
The morning the shutdowns were announced for Texas, our phones began ringing off the hook with panicked clients. We lost roughly 60% of our recurring revenue in one day.
Fortunately, in the following weeks, the technology industry flourished as more and more clients came to us with business opportunities that arose due to a rise in remote working, distant education, and the transition of many aspects of our lives to the digital form.
In short order, we were forced to switch focus and onboard a completely different set of clients, but we are grateful for the opportunity to do so!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
As I was working on establishing my business, I was enthusiastic about its potential success, but things in my hometown in Canada weren’t so good. While I was in the process of growing my business, my mother was undergoing cancer treatment.
This was extremely challenging for me as she had to undergo chemotherapy in Canada while I was miles away in Dallas. During those days, I found myself struggling to focus on Blu Insight while my mother was going through such a difficult time. Unfortunately, my mother passed away three months after I launched Blu Insight. I was, however, incredibly fortunate to have the flexibility that allowed me to fly back home and spend the last few weeks of my mother’s life with her.
I miss my mother every day, but I know that she would be so proud of the success of my business.
