We recently connected with Kaylan Mary and have shared our conversation below.
Kaylan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
The definition of success in the entertainment industry is very subjective. To me, success means a lot of things. Success isn’t JUST money or fame or millions of followers. Success is also working hard at something you love to put quality into the world. Success is using your gifts to inspire people. Success is building a name for yourself and creating a legacy through your art. Success is finding happiness through every step of of your journey. I believe to be successful, you have to be willing to put the work in. You have to be willing to sacrifice. You have to be willing to never give up and defy every odd put against you. You have to be willing to be a student and always be eager to learn. Be the best at what you do and work at it everyday. Obtaining success isn’t easy. If it were easy, everyone would do it. You have to really know who you are and take a chance on yourself.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Kaylan Mary. I am an artist, songwriter and actress from Atlanta, GA. I got my start in the entertainment industry as a child. I knew from a very young age that this was what I wanted to do with my life. So I started training extensively in singing acting and dancing and doing artist development. I signed to a label when I was 9 years old as apart of a kids gospel group. We created an entire album and toured, and this is where I really found my love for music.
At the age of 12, I became a member of the well known girl group “Glamour”. In Glamour I was able to accomplish a plethora of things. We performed at the Apollo. We were on the X factor and made it all the way to the top 10 groups, We signed under grammy award winning Kandi Burruss, We had reoccurring roles on “Star” on FOX. We won a GA Music Award for the best R&B group in the state. We performed on the Emmy award winning talk show “The Real”, We toured, we made incredible music, and we gained an incredible fan base.
In 2019, I started my solo career as Kaylan Mary. Since being solo, I’ve released music that has gone on to have millions of streams across all platforms, I’ve had roles on shows and movies on networks such as Disney+ and Lifetime, I’ve written songs for artists that have played on rotation on radio stations such as Radio Disney, I’ve written songs that have gotten national TV exposure on shows such as NBC’s “Songland”, and so much more.
I’m just a black girl who had big dreams and worked hard to make them come true. I’m so grateful that God placed these gifts on the inside of me, and because of my passion and burning desire, I get to share these gifts with the world and inspire others that their dreams can come true too.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is working really hard on a project or idea and seeing it come to fruition. For me, I put my all into everything I do. So when I’m finally done with something and I give it to the world, it’s always a great feeling knowing that the product is something I worked really hard on. It’s also a great feeling when other people can appreciate the work I put in and get inspired from something that I create. That’s the reason why I do what I do.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One lesson I had to unlearn is comparing my journey to others. There’s not just one pathway to success. It can happen in many different ways and at different speeds for everyone. I would often look at other people’s journey and immediately compare it to mine and wonder how they obtained something that I wanted so badly for myself. But comparison is the thief of joy. It would literally deter my focus, create envy in my heart, and just overall make me unhappy. It was an unhealthy habit. I’m so glad that I now understand the meaning of God’s timing. What God has for you, it is for you and ONLY you, and no one can take that away. Always remember that what is meant for you will find its way to you. So rejoice with others and celebrate the successes of the people around you. As long as you keep working hard and stay true to yourself, your time will come. There’s room at the top for everyone.
