We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kaylan Fox a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kaylan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
Being a business owner wasn’t always in my plan. I was awarded my business once I graduated from Clark Atlanta University, and the first instinct I had for my business was to create a production company. I had a mixture of emotions to figure whether or not a production company was going to make sense, but given the fact that I was an upcoming producer with various creative endeavors in the works, it made sense, so I took the leap. I have been loving the experience ever since, and though it wasn’t in my plan, it was definitely meant for me to take this journey since it is driven with passion.

Kaylan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Kaylan T. Fox and I am a producer, creative director, and owner of KTF Productions LLC. I got into the movie and TV industry initially with the love of television gravitating me towards theatre. After years of attending a performing arts high school for theatre, I was taught the balance of discipline with my school work and allowing my creativity to flourish at a young age.
My company provides everything one needs to create a show from production services to the equipment. I help people bring the vision they may have in their head onto screen. I not only find solutions for all problems, I also attempt to think of the end result before we begin. I establish a relationship with my clients so there can be a level of comfortability, but while maintaining a level of professionalism. I think it is important for them to get just as acquainted with me as I am with them.
I am really proud at the fact that my creativity isn’t limited, so my portfolio is filled with multiple different genres of shows, including sitcoms, podcasts, children’s programs, independent films, lifestyle shows, and much more for everyone to enjoy.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My overall mission that’s driving my creative journey is to create something that’s forever evolving and evoking emotions from people with my art, even if it’s simply making them jovial. That is an emotion that is sometimes forgotten to be captured, but regardless if the art is made to escape reality or to be relatable, you should feel something. And as a Black woman, I want to avoid producing content centered around trauma, so I am very particular on the projects I decide to be a part of.
As I was growing up, I saw shows and movies that were captivating to watch from the music to the lighting, but sometimes it took getting older to realize that the message or lesson was always present in the story, but you have to view it from a different perspective. So the first watch is not going to be the same as the 16th, and that makes the work even more fascinating. Having people enthralled from the artistry on different levels and perspectives is my ultimate goal because you will eventually want to watch it again.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Since there is no straight and narrow path a creative can follow, it is hard to explain to a non-creative the sacrifices and the discipline one must take in order to grow in this industry and achieve my goals. It’s a constant battle of balance.
Creatives want to stay true to who they are as an artist, while simultaneously being open-minded to constructive criticism and what’s marketable. Then we must find a way to put monetary value on our art, by knowing our worth, without making money define us or our artistry. We desire being outgoing with our friends, but we don’t always have concrete schedules, so breaking discipline can hinder us and cause a cycle of procrastination, so we can’t always go out. It honestly takes sacrifice to obtain the goal, but if you know where you are headed, it should be worth it at the end.
And given the fact that my craft is intertwined with my career, I have to allow myself time to rest, and to give myself some grace if I do decide to make it my priority to relax rather than going out or working. My mind is constantly racing, so in order to prevent burnout, rest is necessary. And people who respect your dreams, will respect your boundaries. However, this does not mean to exclude me, but be wary that I may not be viable to go out every time.
