We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kaylan Boss. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kaylan below.
Kaylan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
We founded Suburb Pop the Fall of 2017. It all started with the launch party for Kat’s poetry book, Girl, Who Hurt You? This event was one of the defining moments for Suburb Pop, because we were able to incorporate our shared loves of art, live music, and hosting, while also showcasing our personal brands and newly established businesses. The launch party gave me the opportunity to create a storefront experience for my online lifestyle blog and jewelry boutique, The Visionary Boss. Throughout the entire night, our guests raved about the event experience, production, all the details that made it feel eminent and inspired.
After the success of the launch party, we were driven to create more experiences that fused the social aspects of group shopping, the liveliness of art and music, and the creativity of local makers, and small businesses. We also wanted to curate an inclusive space that welcomed creatives, entrepreneurs, professionals, and small business owners. Most importantly, we wanted to give people the opportunity to experience pop-up activations that were comparable to influencer and invite-only events, or high-end gifting suites. The Suburb Pop community organically grew into a network of individuals who were influential in different industries, from business-technology to real estate, sound engineering, and so on.

Kaylan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Suburb Pop is a pop-up event company, bringing shopping, art and culinary experiences to the hottest venues and event spaces. Our events feature makers’ markets, galleries with work by local artists and small businesses, and inclusive, interactive activations.
Kaylan Boss and Kat Stylez, both twin sisters, are the founders of Suburb Pop.
Kaylan Boss is also the founder of The Visionary Boss, a wellness and lifestyle blog. Since 2016, she has shared the best in health & nutrition, the hottest Tampa restaurants and entertainment, style, career, and self-development on TheVisionaryBoss.com. Additionally, Kaylan helps streamline the promotional and digital branding needs for wellness, beauty, and hospitality companies. She is currently in graduate school for business management and data analytics.
In addition to Suburb Pop, Kat is an indie writer, and influencer and partnership manager. December 2017, she debuted her book, Girl, Who Hurt You?, which she describes as her thoughts, epiphanies, and feelings that have the power of resonating and healing many. Kat’s poetry explores themes of self-love, healing, and breaking generational curses.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media is the modern-day business card. It also serves as a portfolio and digital timeline. Growing our social media for Suburb Pop took lots of strategic planning and time. Having fun with our content also helped grow our social media audience. Since day one we have posted colorful photos with witty, engaging captions to promote our pop-up shop experiences. That alone anticipated our followers to attend upcoming events and tag their friends. To build your social media presence, (whether you’re a small business or boutique agency), we’d would recommend utilizing multiple features, like Reels and Stories.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
It truly takes a team to execute high-production events. A great team, at that! Luckily, we have collaborated with great venues and their management teams who were just as passionate about our mission as us. Additionally, we’ve outsourced skilled audio production teams and assistants for larger events, like our 2020 Self-Love Conference, and last spring’s garden party pop-up. The key to contracting and managing a successful team starts with clear communication. Our biggest priority is to execute events that are mutually valuable for our featured vendors/makers and our attendees. When we add new people to our team, we communicate our brand’s missions and goals early on.
More advice we have for managing teams and maintaining high morale is to practice what you preach. Managers and founders should embody qualities that they seek for in others. Encompass high integrity. Treat your team with respect. Value their talents, knowledge, and skills. Pay them their worth.
