We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kayla Young a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kayla, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry.
I have seen so many trends flow through the wedding industry, from really warm photos to more timeless + clean edits. The direction I am seeing many photographers shift into has been film and true to color editing styles. I myself favor more cinematic photos, I find that capturing the moment as it’s happening without making adjustments to my clients really creates a movie like picture. Some trends that I’ve also noticed that are hot right now are bows, smaller wedding party and some couples have gotten rid of their wedding parties completely, smaller wedding cakes- no more 3-6 tiered gigantic cakes, flash photography, wedding dress codes to match the theme of the wedding, bold detailing on either the brides dress, veil, or invitations, and lastly colorful wedding dresses instead of white!

Kayla, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi there! My name is Kayla Young and I am the proud creator behind Moody Bleu Photography. I started out my business in the thick of Covid back in 2020. I was working full time in the grocery industry and we were really struggling as a nation during that time and working in a field were people were panicking to get food and water for survival was really scary and extremely exhausting. I decided to quit my job and pursue my passion in photography full time right before thanksgiving. At first it was really tough but I found a good balance and started to thrive on my own. It has been my biggest blessing to do what I love everyday. I’m really proud of how far I’ve been able to come without a degree and just live the American dream. Many people told me I was making a mistake and that I shouldn’t quit my job to chase a dream but I also have an amazing support system and a loving boyfriend who have done nothing but support me in my passion and encourage me to live out my dreams. I have done 600 + photoshoots since going full time and I’m just so grateful.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building an audience on social media from ground zero is tough. It takes hard work, dedication, and consistency. I have found that sharing more of my personal life through my social medias gives people more of an insight on who they’re hiring. I am funny, kind, caring, loving, and supportive. I have been so lucky to also surround myself with such empowering women within this industry who also push me to be my better self. Social media is also one of the main reasons my business took off – that is how I promote myself and meet new clients! If I could give anyone advice it would be to just be yourself o social media and don’t try to oversell yourself. Your ideal clientele will find you based off of your own personality and what you decide to share with the world.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I have always had a creative side and went to college for a degree that really had to interest in my life. I decided to take a leap of faith and drop out to pursue my career in Photography. Traveling and capture peoples most important milestones has been my driving force. Making people feel beautiful and sharing memories with them to look back on in 50 years makes my heart just explode.
