A close friend was looking for some unique treats for her daughters 1st birthday. I had played around with cake pops before and I thought, I can make these for you! They were winter wonderland themed cake pops.
Folks are the party literally devoured them! I thought I may be on to something here LOL! That was my first paid gig.
Kayla, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well my name is Kayla and I am the owner of Poppin Kakes, LLC a bakery based out of Washington, D.C. by way of Maryland.
As a Foreign Service family, my husbands job requires us to travel around the world to work. In 2008, we moved overseas. I had never been overseas before let alone to live. This being the case I missed home a lot. I missed the delicious food items my family would make. My mom has this 7 up pound cake recipe that is my favorite. Because I missed it so, I started playing around in the kitchen. I hit a few bumps in the road as it was a hard task to try to find all the ingredients necessary in the country where we lived to make it. I had to make do with what was available. I served it at a dinner one night and not one piece was left on the table!
When we moved back to the states. I wanted to bring extra money and a good friend was having a first birthday party for her daughter and wanted some unique treats. I told her what I could make some cake pops and she trusted me ( naturally lol). I made them and they were all gone by the end of the paty. People came up to make asking if they could have my information. It was at that moment I knew I had something to share with the world. The following year I created the Poppin Kakes and literally I have never looked back. I was the blessing I didn’t know I needed.
When you book with Poppin Kakes you are booking with more than just a cake lady. No you are in for a sweet sweet surprise. My cakes not only look great they also taste great! We offer high quality products and services and that I believe sets us apart.
Cakes and cupcakes are my thing now. (birthday, weddings etc). My motto is to have every customer I meet to taste a little bit of heaven in every bite.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
That I needed to take every order possible to get my name out there. Don’t get me wrong, this came work, but then burn out is real. I am a wife, a mom and government employee ( on top of other hats I wear), I was going at a speed that just wasn’t sustainable.
I’m learning that slow and steady really does when the race.
