We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kayla Warren a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kayla, thanks for joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success can mean a variety of things depending on who you ask. It can be measured in a multitude of ways depending on someone’s personal goals. These can include career success, school success, or even skin success. No matter what someone is looking to be successful in, there seems to always be a few key factors in someone achieving success. In my experience, the most important trait is being resilient. Resilience is important because nothing worth fighting for and working towards is ever easy. It never seems to fail that setbacks and challenges always seem to happen all at once and pile up quickly. During these times in your journey, if you remain resilient, you can accept these setbacks as a part of the journey and keep moving forward, making you stronger as you achieve your success. Just like many others, there have been plenty of times I have been set back, including in my business. In every instance I have remained focused on my goals and worked to find a new path to succeed. Some of these challenges have been finances, trying to market myself, self confidence, and my biggest challenge has been trying to accept that I can’t be perfect all the time. I know others can relate that it can be incredibly hard to be a perfectionist, especially with running their own business. In these instances, I have to remind myself that it takes time to get where I want to be. I remind myself to focus on what I can do now and do those things to the best of my ability. In conclusion, success requires hard work, discipline, and like I stated, resilience. Anything you may want to be successful in, takes sacrifices to get to where you want to be. I currently have a day job to support my family, but every bit of free time and every extra dollar I get is spent growing my own business. My dream is to be my own boss and be financially free so I know even though it is an absolute grind right now, when I succeed, it will be all that more rewarding. Whatever it is you want to be successful in, if you have a passion and love for it, go for it. Take the leap of faith and chase after your dreams.

Kayla, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am so excited to tell everyone who I am! I got into the esthetics industry in 2018, after I graduated high school. Right out of school, I had gotten a job at a resort spa, which mostly entails giving high end relaxing facials. I loved helping people relax, but I wasn’t completely fulfilled. Why? At a resort spa, you usually only see clients one time, when they are on vacation. So any magic I worked on their skin or products I recommended for home care, I would never get to see the results since I wouldn’t see them again. After my job at the resort spa, I decided to start working at a medical spa. This is where I felt better, because I could see clients once a month and compare their before and afters, and alter their treatment plan and homecare if needed. But again, I found myself not completely fulfilled. Why? Like working for any business, I did not have control over decisions, such as what homecare I would really like for the client to be on. I felt like clients were on a conveyor belt, back to back all day, where I couldn’t truly connect and feel for my client. To me, building a relationship is a huge part of the industry I am in. Fast forward to now, I have my laser technician license, and do laser as my day job, but I also work at my business any chance I get. I became a certified acne expert with Face Reality, when I opened Skinventure. My own personal skinventure started when I began struggling with acne, years before I became a licensed esthetician. I would buy any product I could get my hands on, just to then make my skin even more compromised. My own skin motivated me to learn how to treat acne, which then inspired me to create Skinventure. My purpose is to help treat and maintain results of everyone, at whichever stage they are in their skinventure! I am so proud of my little business and what the future holds for it, and my family! My family’s life is rapidly changing as I am currently 6 months pregnant with a baby girl AND Skinventure is moving into its very own studio as we speak. My husband and I have been doing renovations on the space, and we are so proud and excited to see where this new journey takes us!

Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
I genuinely am interested in how my clients skin is doing after a treatment with me! A couple of days after a treatment, I send my clients a text message to see how they are doing, and if they have any questions. 99 out of 100 times they are doing fantastic and are loving their skin with no questions, but the 1 time someone has a question I want to be accessible to answer it for them. I am so thankful that ANY of my clients have chosen to come to me and trusted me, when there are so many options out there. I am always so interested to hear how someone found me, and why they picked me! I want to go above and beyond for any of my clients, I am truly so grateful they trust and support me and Skinventure! There is not a day where I don’t think about my clients, my potential clients, and what I can do to help them. I get so much fulfillment to help people achieve their skin goals.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
