Kayla, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
As I reflect on my journey, I have always had a passion for modeling just as brightly as my dedication to healthcare. Balancing these two seemingly disparate worlds has been a challenge, but one that I was determined to navigate. One particular risk stands out vividly in my memory, a moment where my commitment to modeling collided head-on with my responsibilities as a nursing student.
It was during my second year of nursing school when I received an unexpected opportunity to participate in a prestigious fashion show in Los Angeles. This show was not just any event; it was known for launching careers and attracting industry insiders. The chance to walk the runway and potentially gain exposure seemed like a dream come true for my modeling aspirations. The Model Experience is designed to help models thrive on their career journey allowing them to be endorsed by major fashion companies. However, the timing couldn’t have been worse — the show was scheduled right in the middle of my final exams week. On top of me having to juggle the responsibilities of being an adult and working a daily 9 to 5.
I faced a dilemma and was overwhelmed: attend the fashion show and risk jeopardizing my academic standing in nursing school, or decline the opportunity and wonder what could have been. After much deliberation and seeking advice from mentors, I made a decision. It was time to step out on faith and fully invest in myself. I decided to take the risk and participate in the fashion show.
The weeks leading up to the event were a whirlwind of preparation. I juggled late-night study sessions with runway rehearsals, clinical rotations with fittings, photoshoots , planning an itinerary , partnering with designers to bring their vision to life and of course moments of doubt with bursts of excitement. On the day of the show, I felt a mix of nerves and exhilaration as I stepped onto the catwalk. The adrenaline rush was undeniable, knowing that this moment could potentially shape my future in modeling.
After the show, I returned to nursing school with a sense of relief and accomplishment, but also with a lingering anxiety about how my decision might impact my academic performance. I threw myself into my studies, determined to make up for lost time and prove that I could excel in both my passions.
In the end, my risk paid off. I managed to perform well in my exams, demonstrating to myself and others that with dedication and careful planning, it was possible to pursue both modeling and nursing simultaneously. The experience taught me valuable lessons in time management, prioritization, and the importance of seizing opportunities when they arise. In doing so, I was able to form connections, networking opportunities, featured in magazines, billboards and share the stage with performing artist such as Dani Leigh, Kali and Lola Brooke.
Looking back, I’m grateful for the support I received from my peers and instructors, who understood my dual ambitions and encouraged me to follow my dreams. I took a risk and put myself in position to thrive actually doing what I love. That pivotal moment in the fashion show affirmed my belief that taking calculated risks, even when they seem daunting, can lead to unexpected growth and success. It was a defining chapter in my journey, reminding me that sometimes, the greatest rewards come from stepping outside of your comfort zone. Because I invested in myself I’ll be modeling in the NYFW this year again. I’m forever grateful!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m glad to introduce myself. I’m someone who wears multiple hats: I’m a nursing student with a deep passion for healthcare, and I’m also a model who finds immense fulfillment in the world of fashion and beauty. My journey into these dual realms began with a profound interest in both fields from a young age. I’ve always been drawn to caring for others and making a positive impact on people’s lives, which naturally led me to pursue nursing as a career path. Simultaneously, I discovered a love for modeling, which ignited my creativity and allowed me to express myself artistically.
Balancing these two passions hasn’t been without its challenges, but it has been incredibly rewarding. I can’t wait to actually enjoy the fruits of my labor. In nursing school, I’ve dedicated myself to mastering the knowledge and skills necessary to provide compassionate and competent patient care. I’m driven by the desire to make a difference in people’s lives during vulnerable moments, and I find fulfillment in the learning process and clinical experiences that prepare me for this noble profession.
On the other hand, modeling has provided me with a platform to explore my creativity and showcase diverse forms of beauty. I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with talented photographers, designers, and stylists, participating in fashion shows, and engaging with a community that celebrates individuality and self-expression. Through modeling, I aim to challenge conventional beauty standards and promote inclusivity and authenticity.
The services I provide through my modeling work include runway modeling, editorial shoots, brand collaborations, and promoting fashion and beauty products. Through my nursing studies, I focus on learning the skills necessary to provide compassionate patient care and contribute positively to the healthcare community.
What sets me apart is my ability to seamlessly blend these two opposite worlds. I bring a unique perspective to both nursing and modeling, combining empathy and technical proficiency with creativity and artistic flair. I believe in the power of storytelling through both healthcare and fashion, whether it’s advocating for patient rights or challenging societal norms.
I’m most proud of my ability to pursue my passions wholeheartedly while maintaining a strong academic and professional standing in nursing school. It’s a testament to my dedication, resilience, and belief that pursuing diverse interests can enrich one’s life and career.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want them to know that I am committed to excellence in both nursing and modeling. I bring professionalism, integrity, and a genuine desire to make a positive impact to everything I do. Whether it’s providing compassionate care to patients or bringing creative visions to life on the runway, I strive to inspire and empower others through my work.
Ultimately, I see my dual pursuits as complementary facets of a fulfilling and purpose-driven life. They allow me to grow personally and professionally, and I’m excited to continue evolving in both fields, making meaningful contributions along the way.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Certainly! One moment that stands out in my journey and highlights my resilience occurred during a particularly challenging semester in nursing school. I was juggling rigorous coursework, and maintaining commitments in the modeling industry. It was a period where time seemed scarce, and the pressure to excel in both realms was intense.
One day, amidst this hectic schedule, I received news that Prep Curry had a major modeling opportunity and was initiating a show to give back to our city. Initially, I felt overwhelmed and torn between my academic responsibilities and my passion for modeling.
Instead of letting the stress consume me, I made a deliberate decision to prioritize effectively and strategically. I approached my professors, explaining my situation transparently and seeking their advice. With their guidance and support, I mapped out a detailed plan: I intensified my study sessions, allocated specific time slots for modeling rehearsals, and enlisted the help of peers and mentors for additional academic support.
During that week, I pushed myself harder than ever before, managing late nights of studying after full days in clinical rotations. There were moments of doubt and exhaustion, but I remained focused on my goals. When the day of the show arrived, I felt a mixture of nerves and determination. Walking onto the runway, I drew upon the resilience I had cultivated throughout my journey — the ability to persevere despite challenges and setbacks. Despite the odds against me, I felt not only relieved but I was finally able to embrace my journey with more confidence.
After successfully navigating that demanding week, I emerged with a profound sense of accomplishment. Not only did I excel in my nursing studies, but I also delivered a memorable performance in the fashion show. It was a testament to my resilience, adaptability, and commitment to pursuing my passions while maintaining academic excellence.
This experience taught me invaluable lessons in time management, prioritization, and resilience. It reinforced my belief that with determination and strategic planning, it is possible to overcome obstacles and thrive in multiple facets of life. I carry this resilience with me as I continue to pursue my dual passions in nursing and modeling, embracing challenges as opportunities for growth and learning.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Combining the roles of a fashion model and nursing student presents a unique intersection of interests and aspirations. Actually, there are various goals and mission driving my creative journey.
As a runway model and nursing student, the overarching mission would likely revolve around balancing creativity and compassion such as Empowering Representation by challenging stereotypes and promoting diversity and inclusivity in the fashion industry. Most importantly, by participating in runway shows and photo shoots, the aim might be to showcase different body types, cultural backgrounds, and styles, thereby empowering individuals to embrace their uniqueness.
Advocating for Health and Wellness is another goal. As a nursing student, the mission would involve acquiring knowledge and skills to provide quality healthcare and support to patients. This journey would emphasize compassion, empathy, and a commitment to improving health outcomes for individuals and communities.
Forming Educational Outreach programs by combining fashion and healthcare, there could be a mission to educate the public on health-related topics such as preventive care, mental health awareness, or healthy lifestyle choices. This could be done through collaborations with healthcare organizations or using fashion platforms to raise awareness.
Another goal might be to inspire young individuals interested in both fashion and healthcare fields. This could involve mentorship, sharing experiences, and demonstrating how creativity and compassion can intersect to create meaningful impact in society.
Lastly, the journey as a runway model and nursing student would likely involve personal growth, learning, and overcoming challenges. It could be about embracing the discipline and rigor required in nursing education while also enjoying the creativity and expression found in fashion.
All in all, the creative journey as a runway model and nursing student could be driven by a mission to empower, advocate, educate, inspire, and grow personally and professionally. It would blend the worlds of fashion and healthcare to make a positive impact on individuals’ lives and society as a whole.
