We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kayla Robson . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kayla below.
Alright, Kayla thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
The 1st time I did stand up was 5/22/22 and I had no idea what I was doing. I asked a producer how to get on a show and one day he called me, and from there I haven’t stopped. Honestly I wouldn’t change anything. After the 1st show I then found a class. That’s when the teach told me this is a marathon not a sprint. So every show I attended big or small I asked comics a plethora of questions. Each person journey is different and you should take away what relates to you. The only obstacle I have is myself. The times I tell myself I’m not good as my counterparts. However i quickly get out that mindset

Kayla, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Kayla Robson. My stage name is Kayla Kandi. I have been doing comedy now for two years.
One day I was at a comedy and paint event and saw comic and I thought to myself I can do that. After the show, I asked the producer how can y’all get on your show? He took my number and he called me a few weeks later and said are you ready to get on stage? I was drastically scared and forgot that I gave him my number but I agreed to go out on stage. Since that day, I have not stopped pursuing a full-time career in Comedy. I took a class a six week course. learned how to properly create jokes, how to have a good stage presence, and the business side of comedy.
Right after graduation, I had a trip to Hawaii .While in Hawaii I found a comedy club and they actually let me perform. So one month after graduating comedy class. I’ve already went to a different time zone ever since comedy class I have not stopped.
Everybody journey in the stand-up world is different. I am truly thankful I went to a class and got structure on this journey. I have asked comics that’s been doing it for a year to 20 years of their experience. I took what was dear to me and applied to my journey. Everyone journey looks different and I am enjoying learning my journey and continue on this path. At the end of the day, I just want everybody to laugh at these jokes and know that I’m a little girl from East Cleveland, Ohio trying to make her mom, dad and her siblings proud.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Being a female comedian, sometimes I already have the deck stacked against me. This is still very much a male dominant field. One of the things that made me more resilient was a competition that I was in. 32 comedians going against each other in a March madness bracket. There were only six women comedians out the 32. I made it to the finals being the only female and in the end won the competition. I had compete with women problems with my health and still keep a smile on my face. I had personal problems arising around me but still had to maintain my composure in the competition. During the competition I had a lot of out of body experience. Some days I didn’t feel funny other days I felt like I didn’t belong. However in this field you have to shake those feelings fast. Ay the end of the day you always have to believe on yourself.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
There are many driving forces behind this journey. One of my main goals is to prove to myself that I can step out on faith and do what I love doing, That comedy will sustain my life and no longer will I be trapped on how my bills will get paid or where my next meal come from. That my gift ,my ability ,my creativity will pave a way for me and my family. Ultimate goal is financial freedom in doing my comedy and also helping other comedians along this journey
