Kayla, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I started as a self-taught microblading artist and gradually expanded my skills to include other permanent makeup services like lip blush and eyeliner tattoo. A year into offering PMU services, a client asked if I would train her in microblading. I agreed, and we spent six days training together. By the 6th day, she confidently microbladed her first client with my guidance. That moment marked the completion of her training and the start of my first permanent makeup course. I began to create a 6-day, 1-on-1, in-person Microblading Course with models included to provide the best hands-on experience.
As I was creating a syllabus for the microblading course, I researched other microblading training programs and noticed a common trend: most courses lasted only 1-2 days. That felt inadequate to me, given the complexity of cosmetic tattooing. Mastering the technique and artistry of microblading takes more than a weekend. Microblading is a skill that requires practice, precision, and time. I saw an opportunity to fill that gap by creating a more thorough and hands-on training experience. So, I became the first microblading instructor in Maryland to offer a course longer than just 1-2 days, giving my students the time they need to build a solid foundation.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Kayla, the owner of The Beauty Solution Studio and Baltimore’s first Black microblading artist and instructor. My journey in the permanent makeup industry has been all about growth and innovation. I specialize in services like microblading, lip blush, and eyeliner tattooing. But beyond offering these services, I also teach comprehensive courses in every service I provide.
At The Beauty Solution Studio, I help clients solve everyday beauty concerns by enhancing their natural features in a way that saves time and boosts confidence. Whether it’s fuller brows, brighter lips, or defined eyes, my goal is to help my clients feel effortlessly put together.
What sets my business apart isn’t just the results, but the process itself. I take pride in making every client’s experience personal and detail-oriented, ensuring the results feel uniquely tailored to them. On the training side, I’m proud to provide one-on-one courses that go far beyond the basics. My training programs are designed to equip students with the skills, confidence, and hands-on experience they need to thrive in this industry.
The thing I’m most proud of is seeing the transformation – not just in my clients’ appearance but also in their self-esteem. There’s nothing like watching someone light up after seeing the final result, whether it’s a client in my chair or a student mastering a new technique.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was the belief that I needed to master everything on my own to be successful, especially in my PMU business. Early on, I felt like I had to do everything, from perfecting my craft to running every aspect of my business, by myself. It wasn’t until I started teaching others that I realized the value in collaboration and sharing knowledge. When I started my PMU training courses, I saw firsthand how working with others could elevate my skills and open new perspectives. It taught me that growth comes not only from refining your own abilities but also from empowering others. Now, I approach both my business and training with a mindset of continuous learning and support, because success is a shared journey, not a solo mission.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What helped me build my reputation within my market was a combination of consistency and staying true to my passions. As a PMU artist and instructor, I make it a point to provide exceptional results for my clients, ensuring that each transformation not only enhances their appearance but also boosts their confidence. I’m also deeply passionate about my training courses, and I focus on delivering in-depth, hands-on experiences that empower my students to succeed. Word of mouth from satisfied clients and successful students has been a major key, and I believe staying true to my craft, continuously learning, and genuinely connecting with people has helped me build lasting trust within my community.
